Freight Rail Roads Start Cutting Services Today

The increased mass of the cargo, plus the length of the train to make the system cost effective vastly increase the cost.
Hardly increases the cost in any major way--the length of the train. You'd have to have more engines pulling it which would cost more fuel of course but "vastly increase"? No.

Not sure but I guarantee it will be 20 times what the politicians tell us.
Absolutely the case. The costs would be enormous. Twenty times? Maybe...but likely not.

It would be nice though to have a palpable expenditure that is actually beneficial, on the cutting edge, with real world deliverables (pardon the pun). Like Hoover Dam, the Apollo program, etc...

Manufacturing centers in the red states in the middle of the nation can have their stuff at the port of LA, Miami, Houston in hours instead of days to ship it with truckers. It just makes sense on the surface.

Screaming "no" at every new idea is probably fun for some people. What if they would have done it to the Apollo program, Hoover Dam, the Erie Canal.... the Interstate highway system....?

You MUST reinforce the roadbed to support the mass. Take a look at the high speed rail in Europe to get an idea of what is required.

It ain't easy.

Neither was developing the Atomic bomb, the Erie Canal, the Interstate highway system, taming the Mississippi.

We're good at things in this nation. Screaming "no" just because it represents a change is flat out stupid.

Yeah, we are. But someone has to pay for it. You ignore that constantly.

Amtrack cutting all "long distance" routes starting tomorrow.

Not sure what "long distance" means...but it don't sound goodly.

Update...

Amtrak cancels all of its long-distance passenger and freight trains

FINALLY some new news!

They vote on Thursday to either go on strike or accept the new contract.

Hold your breath!
