Free speech and responsibility

Sometimes I have stop to think and sometimes I'm stopped. I saw a movie about Larry Flynt this weekend. Recent events made an intresting backdrop. The verdict then was (He had published some very nasty caricatures) that even that was to be regarded as an expression within the boundaries of free speech.

So the defence for free speech is not hypcritical, in my eyes.

Then a freind of mine called. He said that photographs of dead Iraq's where posted on the net - showing those terrible wounds with fully recognizable faces. Somehow that was a one of the times I got stopped to think. These men might have wifes, parents, children who loved them. The publishing of pictures like that is truely equal to displaying photos from morgue.

Surley this must be criminal? I can't see that freedom of speech could be compatile with that kind of blood-thirst.

To really make things sick these images are used to get access to porongraphic material. How deranged are those people?

This is their "rules for posting":

If you are a U.S. Soldier stationed in Iraq, Afghanistan, or any other combat area and would like free SUPPORTER access for the site, you can post real pictures you or your buddies have taken while you have been deployed.

This section is for the gory ones so that people who do not wish to see that kind of stuff can just not go in here. I also do not want already published pictures that were taken by news people. This is supposed to be an area where we can see pictures posted by the solders themselves.

Just post your pics like you normally would and when I see them I will approve you for free access to the wife and g/f area. There have only been a few people cheat from this but I do now know what kind of pics to expect from the guys over there. So please do not waste my time if you are not a military person by just posting iraq pics you found on CNN or something.

Keep up the good work over there guys, we love seeing your pics.

(I don't know if I should post this link - it wouldn't matter would it?)

Free speech cannot be limited by decency or propriety, as that invites abuse. As long as those people give proper warning, I have no problem with it being legal, though I think it's in very bad taste.

I know!

Bad taste isn't illegal...

But think of it:
Someones son is put on display - the last picture of your child - with his head split open and the dead eyes that will follow you for the rest of your life, - and for what? Some teenager wants to watch porn on the net? That is not free speech, that is pure evil.

I'd like this stopped. So now I feel that I am a hypcrit...

I understand what you're saying Just a guy, yer no hypocrite, you just have a good sense of right and wrong.

IMO, this is a price we all must pay on occasion for freedom of speech. We don’t always like what we see, read or hear, and it hurts sometimes, but to keep our freedom we must deal with that.

Well said.

Maybe that is right...

I saw a tabloid dwelling in the death of a cebrity, and I thought that... leave them alone, -they are in grief!
On the other hand, the tabloid is obviously selling.

Maybe if you cut what you belive is the most sick or deranged from free speech, maybe you cross a line there which will make that freedom hollow.

Freedom of speech challenges everyones value system if applied correctly. The whole truth is seldom what people want to be exposed to the public and in fact challenges our right to privacy. I was taught that the news in the USSR was all made up and that to hear the truth, I should listen to Americans. That didn't exactly work either. Reporters and publishers have the freedom to tell the "truth" exactly how they want it to be heard. Kudos to my teachers who taught be to listen between the lines.

Now ya got it, and it gives new meaning to the phrase “Freedom isn’t Free”, don’t it?

BTW…the tabloids published photos of JFKs autopsy too. A most loved Pres. at the time…
This is nothing new, cept for the Net. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Hmmm, rather quickly they stopped showing long passages from 9/11 as that might incite bad feelings against Muslims.

They showed repeatedly the pictures from Abu Grahib.

They mistakenly reported over and over stories about 'flushing of Koran' at Gitmo, even after they were told it wasn't true.

They showed pics of the burned, hanging bodies of GI's/contractors, but then stopped, as they might incite bad feelings about Muslims.

There is video going around that is inciting Muslims over 'mistreatment' by British troops, over two years ago. It's being investigated by the UK, but a similar report a year or so ago, was admittedly doctored.

Piss Christ

Mary covered in dung, these were used by WaPo as 'examples' of what got Christians 'upset' as analogous to Danish Cartoons. How many were killed by those upset Christians?

You know what is worse than publishing shit, calling it art, and claiming "free speech"?

The knowlege that there is a willing audience.
