Free Healthcare Question

Doctors in the UK make 1/3 of what doctors in the US make. You get what you pay for..

Hmmm - Here was my top result. It may be true that US docs make more than UK docs now, but triple? Don't believe so.

I do understand this wasn't the point your post. But question - Do you haggle with your primary physician or your specialists the way you would a car dealer or or folks at a garage sale? I have a couple of times, but most would have no idea how to go about such a thing.

Also, to a large extent, insurance companies have a maximum they will pay on any given procedure. Most docs know better than to charge double what insurers will pay.
I would most definitely haggle.

So if a doctor, has certain skills and can save a life why should they not charge what they want to versus what the Govt tells them they may, which is what universal healthcare is?
They should be able to charge what they like but there are other considerations too. The free enterprise system must allow competition and that's where government comes in. Other countries allow all competition and the government then undercuts the higher priced doctors.

That's the facts and it's easily proven by a statistical analysis of the government run universal HC systems of the world.

But it's a great discussion for Americans to have on HC.

And it goes for the plumber as well. Free enterprise invites competition and keeps services affordable. Big corporate money skews the system by blackmailing politicians.

That the average income of a doctor in the UK is a third as much as the average income in the US?

Definitely :D

Poster's Note: You may be looking at pounds vs dollars.

1.00 British Pound = 1.3657227 US Dollars

But according to this it would certainly appear that US docs make more money - Just not 3x as much

I check with my health insurer normally. If the doc wants more for a procedure than the insurance company says they will pay, I have negotiated. Once the general surgeon met the preauthorization price of my insurance and once we met in the middle. These were friendly negotiations.

Zog - I just looked at my link in more depth and you won. ;)

The only time I've done this is when I had a high-deductible insurance policy with an HSA - ie I was spending my own money. If someone else is picking up the tab, and I'm only paying a nominal co-pay, I don't give a shit what it costs.

Doctors in the US earn more than 3 times as UK doctors. Below is a table that compares how much UK and US doctors earn. Note that the US salaries are given in dollars while the UK salaries are given in pounds.

Two things...nothing is 'free', and price fixing fails.
If my furnace breaks and I do not have heat, my family and I will certainly freeze in the winter time. I may call a plumber, someone who has studied the craft for years to get licensed so that they may fix the furnace. For that service I pay a fee. The plumber didn’t learn the trade to work cheaply and the better the plumber usually the higher the price point.

Like any other service it should be a contract between the patient and the doctor. Works with LASIK and with cosmetic surgery.
Absolutely.
