Those sounds like reasonable warnings, things like be aware in Times Square or don't go to the Bronx at night. Overall New York city is relatively safe for a city that size.

When we go to Paris we know to be careful near Gar du Nord at night etc. its the same thing, every large city has good and bad areas.
