Why, that would be every other President before him, going back at least as far as who? Nixon? That's four Democrats and six Republicans, if you include P01135809 (who is not a Republican).

This is a valid point. Many of these immigrants came legally or under special access programs from as long ago as the Cuban Revolution, escaping communists or other dictatorships. They are generally hardworking Americans.

But of course our Southern Border policy and refugee policy is not now working effectively, and illegal or undocumented immigrants are a huge problem, constituting both a population easily exploited by criminals and employers and a problem for law enforcement and our welfare and medical systems. The Dems have been very stupid in handing this issue to the populist right on a silver platter.

Another ignored aspect is that U.S. population as a whole is far larger than ever before, so simply mentioning the record high total number of “foreign born” in the U.S. is misleading.

The actual percentage of foreign born today in the U.S. is actually almost exactly the same as it was in three other periods of high immigration when workers were sought by industry and/or agriculture. Look at the years from 1860 to 1920 and especially 1870, 1885, and 1910 on the graph below.

Of course the impasse created by demagogues and industry lobbyists in our two party system has turned the issue into one very difficult to resolve politically. But that is another issue.
