What do you think? Looks like America is ready to join France and Germany? We have become so numbed to what socialism really looks like that we think you can have it in degrees and it poses no real threat to freedom.

While many Americans are oblivious to such things, there are enough of us (read: Repbulicans and laissez-faire conservatives) to keep the welfare state from destroying America with fascism and socialism.

Hmmm, federal spending what, doubles, with Republicans controlling both houses and the White House? I guess big government must protect us from the welfare state!

This is a really interesting question.

I live in a socialist country. It is run by a elected socialist government. This governments political opposition are mainly socialists. I eat socialistic food and has attended socialist school and I have a socialist military training and finally I am programing socialist computers. (Oh, I have socialist kids too, and a wife and two socialist rabbits).

I would say I have a good grip on socialism. Or so I thought.

    Adaption
People like labels. Fascist, Communist, Socislist and so on. Labels sticks. One of the greatest things about humans is our ability to adapt. We are everywhere now and has ventured into the most deadly environments there are. From the deepest oceans, todeserts and arctic areas. Even into space, where life is not possible. So we adapt, and with us adapting our systems of rule adapt too, but a bit slower and often with the label still attached.

    Systems
All systems fail. It the way it is. Universe, solar system, ecology and most certainly man-made systems fails evetually. How do we coupe with failing systems? We adapt. We adapt into a working system or we adapt the system to work.

    Time
Time frame of humans seems to be like 20 years back and 5 forward. All conclusions and comparisons take place within that frame. Comparisons with WWII are made but more like a curiosity than an actuall event. Comparisons 2000 years back are still as valid! Nothing has changed really. Why did Rome fall? What happened to Napoleons France? What happend to native indians? What will happen to us?

Getting kind of long this - sorry?

Our (my) 100+ year old socialism system has adapted. It has adapted out of socialism. And we continue to change it, bit by bit. My grand grandfather wouldn't recognize it anymore. So when comparing different systems one should take into account what "time it is", what is the economic situation, political status and what way is progression going at the moment.
Socialism is bad? Well it is alot better than famine. Valid then.
Socialism is good? Well not as good as an open market. Valid now.

Here is a litte question, wich country seems socialistic:

    Country A
Make people freely administer their retirement funding on the stock market.

    Country B
Finds it necessary to monitor what books people are reading.

Now all of this is personal ideas or thoughts, I have no reference or link to post. But still, doesn't it look like a country under strain or pressure consolidates around a strong government (or have a revolution)? Couldn't even dictatorship be a tolerable system for a brief time to get a nation organized?

So I have a suggestion that could be interesting and useful wherever you live:

Try to drop left/right and system vs system for a day and focus on some issues instead. (Like the top-5 topic under Politics).

Hear hear. It's easy on "both" sides of politics take heart and comfort in slogans. We'd all be better off if we thought about the policies rather than the labels. But politicians of all political persuasions prefer us to think in slogans and labels just as long as we do their bidding. A critical electorate scares politicians, they want us docile, supine and at their bidding.
