Will Roger's solution to German U-boat attacks.
Among a published collection of Will Roger's newspaper columns, this one I've not forgotten.
He suggested that we bring the Atlantic Ocean up to boiling temperature. Our Great Britain allies superior naval fleets will sink the Kaiser's U-Bootes as they're forced to surface.
His response to technical difficulties was the reply, “I deal with policy; I leave other details to others”.
Correll, if sufficient competent pickers willing to work to do stoop labor for competitive USA wages could be assembled, the cost of picking the USA crops would be unjustified. It's cheaper to import the food. It's still cheaper to process the crops locally. So we don't need USA crops and USA crop processing facilities.
OK, we solved that problem but the farmland owners are dissatisfied, and there will be a great many ghost towns where there are now agricultural and ranching communities. That may be satisfactory to you but those people wouldn't be pleased, their governors and legislators don't like to hear complaints and those complaints rise to federal levels.
We could compromise; fresh USA grown or raised food will only be available to the wealthy; others can eat cheaper foreign processed foods. It seems we're going in that direction.
You suggest temporary imported labor? But those farms, ranches, food processors, service industries, and construction sites have labor needs over the entire year. Any idea of the costs to find and expel all those illegals that have and will continue to mingle then settle throughout our populations? You advocate we retrieve those that choose to escape from bondage and strip them of their possessions? They reply, “What possessions? We now have little or nothing to lose!” as they flee to our cities.
Respectfully, Supposn
