That is what some Republicans who voted down the equal pay bill this month would have you believe. “There’s a disparity not because female engineers are making less than male engineers at the same company with comparable experience,” the Republican National Committee said this month. “The disparity exists because a female social worker makes less than a male engineer.”

Take doctors and surgeons. Women earn 71 percent of men’s wages — after controlling for age, race, hours and education. Women who are financial specialists make 66 percent of what men in the same occupation earn, and women who are lawyers and judges make 82 percent.

Other occupations have managed to narrow or even close the pay gap. As pharmacists, women make 91 percent of what men make and as computer programmers they make 90 percent. Male and female tax preparers, ad sales agents and human resources specialists make equivalent salaries.

The one thing they didn't control is experience, which is different from hours if you only calculate using the given hours of the review period. Age and experience do not necessarily correlate. And as for doctors and lawyers, were specialties taken into account? You can't lump GP's and Specialists, nor the different surgery specialties. Patent lawyers also make far more than your typical staff attorney at a large law firm.

Finally, "financial specialists" also covers a very wide range of actual jobs, rendering it suspect as well.

Every time you guys try to find a wage gap, you have to increase the pool to include jobs and specializations that should not be compared to each other.

Again for the feeble minded , The equal pay law is about equal pay for a given job. It is not about the average pay across a population of employees.

I know it is a shocker to you but there are many pay levels in companies. There are some jobs that are more populated by women especially in the asssistant/secretarial/receptionist roles.

Women still need to make gains in higher management, but to look at an average & decide is poor logic. In my restaurant example, the average tells nothing. To make it better for you feeble minded people, I would need to fire some of those women & hire men to bring down my male average. You think that would be better for the women? Or is it better that more women were hired.
