After the last electoral debacle, the GOP commissioned a famous "autopsy" analysis of their problems with the voters which pointed to three major weaknesses: the Occupy Wall St. movement had identified the Party with the mega rich, alienating the white working class, interest in the Party by blacks and Latinos was dropping like a stone, and the "woman problem" was threatening to alienate the largest single demographic group in the electorate.

Reince Priebus took swift, decisive action. He came up with an angry white billionaire whose in-you-face Archie Bunker style swiftly won the hearts of the Reagan Democrat base. To give the GOP a female face and steal some of Hillary's thunder, Carly Fiorina was brought on board as a female Republican alternative. To crack the solid wall of black loyalty to the Democrats, Dr. Carson with his ghetto roots, professional accomplishments and born-again faith was made the third Musketeer of the group charged with overcoming the growing perception of the Republican Party as the home for grumpy old white men.

One out of three ain't bad. Trump took off beyond the Party's wildest expectations -- in fact, he is succeeding too well, becoming a conservative Frankenstein's monster. Carly had no such luck, she turned out to be pretty much of a dud and never got out of Trump's shadow, much less winning over any of Hillary's adoring fans.

That leaves Dr. Carson. He's got the right color, he's got the golden resume, but the big problem is that he can't talk above a white man's mumble and he can't remember the sound bites his staff feeds him. He's got some pity votes from white Republicans within the party who are anxious to show they are not part of the racist fringe, but in black America the poor guy has sunk without a ripple.

That is a fantasy comforting to grumpy whites. Factors like Selective Service and the collapse of our manufacturing sector have far more to do with black unemployment than imagined "addictions". Dr. Ben is a classic example of that affirmative action that guys like you hate so much. It is funny to see you put away one set of prejudices in order to use another.

Many did. 75% of rural black families ad 50% of white families were share croppers after 1900 and before WWII. White kids stayed in school longer. White kids were too dumb to pick cotton?

Speakig of blacks and education and employment, one hero of mine was and is Art Temple Jr. of Southern Pine Lumber Company.

In 1948, he assumed general managership of SPLC and Temple Lumber Company in Diboll, Tx. That year he opened all positions to the "most qualified person," effectively integrating the companies years, even decades, before other area and regional companies. This meant that black kids and white kids competed equally for employment.

He was also very instrumental in helping Diboll ISD to integrate in the 1960s, years before other East Texas school districts. The one time we met, in a meeting, he shouted at me because I disagreed with him on a point. It was an honor.
