Donald Trump is not a career pol. How could he know the difference between pardoning

I should think Rump knows a great deal about pardoning, since he's been pardoning (making excuses for) himself for the last seventy-one years. One of the few things he actually has experience in.

and commuting a sentence? He's not a racist and we should stop expecting so much from him.

Not sure the purpose of the thread. Trump couldn't have "commuted" the sentence. No sentence has been imposed. Now with the pardon, legally Arpaio has been found guilty of a crime and that has criminal action has been accepted (you pardon crimes, not non-crimes).

Pardon's have no impact on civil lawsuits, and actually being found guilty and having been pardoned will allow civil suits to go through faster. (No longer a need to wait for sentencing and an appeals process, once the pardon is accepted there is no appeals process since their is not sentence to appeal.)

Pre-emptive "pardon" recalls the downfall of Gerald Ford and his "crimes he may have committed" fiasco.

It's a satire thread that doesn't really work with serious discussion, but I don't think Ford's pardon is comparable. Ford didn't try to excuse Nixon's crimes so much as to foreclose all legal proceedings to try and move the nation forward, and Ford knew there was a political cost.

The Orange Don is appeasing his racist base.

World Watcher the point of the thread was that the Orange Don equated this with Obama's commuting the sentences of Manning and Rivera, both of whom were punished, and neither commutation was politically motivated

I didn't even see the Satire forum until you mentioned it. Actually --- I don't get the joke :(
