A Michigan judge sent Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick to jail today, after learning that the controversial official violated the conditions of his bond in a perjury case by going to Canada for a business meeting without clearing the trip with the court beforehand.

Kilpatrick apologized this morning to 36th District Court Judge Ronald Giles for the unauthorized trip he made to nearby Windsor, Canada, and pointed out that he "ran in, made a presentation . . . and I ran back."

DETROIT - A judge ruled Friday that there's enough evidence for Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick to stand trial on two felony assault charges stemming from a confrontation with two investigators.

The investigators testified that an angry Kilpatrick shoved one of them into the other and made racial remarks while they were trying to deliver a subpoena in the mayor's perjury case to a Kilpatrick friend last month.

The judge said there was no question the mayor was aware that Wayne County sheriff's Detective Brian White and county prosecutor's investigator JoAnn Kinney were there to perform official business.

White says the mayor shoved him into Kinney when he was trying to deliver the subpoena.

"It's clear Kilpatrick knew who Detective White was. He had previous contact with him through his other case," Giles said in his ruling. "He specifically called him by name in this case."

Kilpatrick and his former top aide, Christine Beatty, were charged in March with conspiracy, perjury, obstruction of justice and misconduct in office, mostly tied to their testimony in a civil trial.

Kilpatrick, though, never stopped fighting, but rather shifted his focus to Trump, lobbying him personally for help and charming him in a 2019 letter that praised the president for his "unprecedented success."

"You have shaken up the entire world ... and that is a great thing to behold," Kilpatrick wrote in the letter, according to Deadline Detroit. "I applaud your boldness and tenacity in confronting the traditional and sometimes deformed politics of our country. You have vociferously exposed the treacherous and calculating schemes of our media and government that have worked to crush families, communities, and even Truth itself. Thank you for standing up, speaking out, and exposing this wickedness."
