This is a list of NYC area street gangs. This was list was compiled by various sources including media, law enforcement, and NYC area gangmembers. It shouldn't be regarded as complete or 100% accurate. Since New York City has a lot of small and medium sized gang plus a lot of turnover in their gang population, many New York Gangs come and go very quickly. I chose 1997 as my cut off point. All of the following gangs have been mentioned in Media accounts, law enforcement or by New York gang members I have spoken to no earlier thYC Gangs

Rise in Cell Phone Theft on NYC Subways
January 21, 2011 at 8:17 am
Subway cell phone robberies have increased by 6%, marking the first rise in crime underground since 2004. Everyone from teen gangs to career criminals have participated in stealing high-tech cell phones.
Most thieves strike in the stairway leading to the street as the victim takes out their phone. Others wait until the train stops and commit the crime just as the doors are closing.
According to Daily News columnist Michael Daly, when comes to stealing Apple products, robbers do not care about about an application that allows users to track their iPod Touches, iPhones, or iPads, because many of the stolen phone are shipped overseas.
