Plenty of whites didn’t arrive here until the early 20th century. They didn’t steal anything - they worked in sweatshops and lived in tenements, eeking out a living - and now they are dead as well. Why in the world would their descendants owe anything?

You don't exempt people, you include people, who can be shown to have benefited from slavery, to pay into a reparations pot. Those Blacks who can be shown to have been connected to slavery get a cut.

I’m OK with the first part, but you’re saying that anybody who descended from slaves gets reparations? What about blacks who got into med school and law school, and would NOT have if they were white, and now earn $500,000 a year or more? They’ve already received reparations.

And what amount would you suggest? Certainly you agree that $5 million is a joke. What about using the Holocaust reparations as a benchmark? It was a few hundred dollars a month, and those recipients suffered DIRECTLY.

Who supported slavery before, during, and after the Civil War?
Who instituted Jim Crow laws to replace slavery after the Civil War?
Who created the Klu Klux Klan?
Who has kept black families in their current state by instituting Welfare programs designed to break up families?

Democrats did. End of Story.

If Reparations Are Owed ... the Democratic Party Should Pay Them​

Every so often, some Democrats call for reparations to compensate Black Americans for slavery and other indignities.​

​

The latest plan comes from San Francisco, where a reparations committee is considering a program that would offer $5 million per qualified Black resident.​

Let’s analyze the issue of reparations from the standpoint of morality and practicality.​

Most people believe that compensation for misdeeds should come from the people who caused the misdeeds. For example, if John Smith and Joe Brown recklessly damage your car, you expect Smith and Brown (or their insurance companies) to pay for the repairs. Normally, you would not expect the repairs to be financed by the entire town in which you live: That would make no sense.​

What if Joe Brown died shortly after the accident? Would you expect his children or grandchildren to pay you? Probably not. Instead, your claim for compensation would be focused on the surviving reckless driver, John Smith. We can apply this logic to the reparations issue.​

​

Obviously, no person alive today existed during the slave era or as an adult in the subsequent Jim Crow or Ku Klux Klan eras.​

However, there are certain responsible entities that existed then and now:​

• The United State government
• Eleven slave states of the Confederacy plus four union slave states
• A handful of corporations with origins dating before the end of slavery
• The Democratic Party

I did not include the Republican Party for a very good reason: It was formed in 1854 by a bunch of abolitionists for the express purpose of ending slavery, which was accomplished at enormous cost 11 years later. On the other hand, the Democratic Party has to be listed for very important reasons, which are explained later.​

We have identified four parties or groups of parties that may bear responsibility for slavery and subsequent discrimination. What is the financial liability of each?​

How much should be paid by the United States and the slave states?​

Shortly after the war, Gen. William T. Sherman signed an order reserving 400,000 acres of Confederate land, to be used for the allotment of 40 acres to each of thousands of former slaves. Unfortunately, after Republican Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, Democrat Andrew Johnson became president, the offer was rescinded, and the land was reclaimed.​

Whatever gets retrieved from descendants of Southern (or Northern) Whites (or any other race) who benefited from slavery or Jim Crow or similar gets distributed. I doubt it will be very much in total but a Black family got a parcel of land returned to them that is worth $20 million, so in some cases it could be significant.

It happens all the time. Every time an interstate road is built through a city, people lose their property. In the past it was generally Black people of course.

How it it “punishing” someone who already benefited by his race and is a millionaire due to the preferential policies that gave him favor. So is that going to be the tact: blacks who don’t get reparations are being “punished”, even if they were accepted to Harvard Law due to their race?

So you’re saying a by case basis? Do you know that amount of research that will take? Will whites have to pay for that?

Eminent domain is much different than taking people's property for political and racial reasons.
It would never make it through the courts.
But, the Democrat Party should make Reparations one of their big issues.
