I'm betting you aren't old enough to have survived the Carter Presidency- but I did. He took a poor economy and turned it into disaster. Part of his policies involved targeting the rich too and decided it was a great idea to hit them with a tax on luxury items since they were the ones who primarily bought them. I bet that sounds like a great idea to your little anti-American class warfare mentality, doesn't it? So democrats slapped a nice tax on stuff like yachts and fine jewelry. What do you think happened? The rich just stopped buying these things-sitting on their money was cheaper. The US boat building industry was wiped out and it was blue collar workers who ended up hurt by this tax, losing their jobs by the thousands. No one bought yachts, governmemt didn't make a killing off the rich, the rich were not hurt-working class people were! Even after it was rescinded, it was too late. Foreign boat building companies immediately stepped into the vacuum Carter singlehandedl created and control it to this day. The other industries affected by the luxury tax took over a decade to recover. You can't target the rich without hurting those who can least afford it- every time. The rich will do just fine and exercise another option people living paycheck to paycheck do not have.

But that isn't the worst of this tax-53% of the tax hike will hit small businesses. 30% of all small businesses have a profit margin between 1-5%. A safe profit margin that allows a business to reliably retain existing staff and possibly expand is 30%. A tax hike on that 30% struggling to stay open with a dismal profit margin is enough to make the difference between staying alive and folding, taking all their jobs down the drain with them. And small businesses are responsible for 83% of jobs. Can you do the math about what a tax hike on small businesses will really mean to those struggling the most- and their employees? You can't raise taxes selectively on the rich without it hurting those the most on the bottom, the most vulnerable to an exonomic down turn and can least afford it.

Our problem is NOT that the rich and small businesses are just not paying enough. Our problem is the out of control spending spree Democrats did when given total control of Congress. THIS is what it looks like when Democrats get control. Same morons who squealed about how AWFUL it was that spending increased under Bush (thanks to a Democrat controlled Congress which controls spending, not the President) gave super majorities to Democrats in 2008 and they put us on the fast track to collapse. Those same squealers about far less spending apparently have no problem they went on their wet dream out of control spending spree the next three generations combined can't pay for and putting us on the fast track to economic collapse. Pretty stupid. The tax hike on the rich not only will not make no dent in the deficit, history has proven government is most likely going to end up with less revenue and will need to borrow evn more -because it will undoubtedly increase unemployment. Government gets its revenue from private sector workers. So if it needs to increase revenue and unemployment is high -a tax hike that will increase unemployment even more will very quickly result in LESS revenue. Not more. Liberals operate on what they FEEL things should be-instead of the way things really are. As a result they are willing to increase human misery because after all, they FELT it should accomplish something totally different from what it did (and reality already told them it would) and will continue to believe it will work no matter how many times it fails, no matter that they do nothing but increase human misery time and again.

Aside from having answered what a truly bad idea it is to raise taxes of any kind right now -Democrats are threatening to harm the economic welfare of all Americans unless they get their way and raise taxes. They have said they will allow all the impending tax hikes scheduled to hit in January happen from capital gains, dividends, payroll tax hike, Bush tax cuts for EVERYONE expires in Jan and for those who like to pretend that across the board tax rate reduction was just for the rich -going to find out it wasn't after all. In all at least 12 tax hikes are scheduled to hit us in Jan -and Democrats have said they will go off that fiscal cliff unless THEY get their way and raise taxes on small businesses and the rich.

Let's try this one. If it is "good" to raise taxes on the top 2%, it is good to raise it for everyone. If it is bad to raise taxes on the 98%, its bad to raise them on anyone. In fact THIS is not the time for any tax hikes.

How does a 3% increase from 36% to 39% on households making 250,000 taxable income cause economic calamiity. We already know that the 3% (and/or the other cut in al brackets) was not paid for and was added to the deficit. Where are all the jobs (other than the ones where you get to ask the customer if they want fries or a baked potato with that)?

If Obama gets reelected, he can lower that to $100,000 next year, $50,000 in 2014 and hit the ones that make fries and baked potatoes with 3% in 2015.

Well we had job growth and a good economy til 2007 after Pelosi and Reid took over congress. The tax cuts helped after a major terrorist attack and airlines about to go under as well as keep several people employed. Now where are the jobs with the stiumuls, obamacare, all these promises we got.......oh our economy is worse than when OBama took over.hmmmm

If the Republicans wanted they could get a compromise of $1,000,000, but they'd rather play chicken with small business.

How much would raising the top tax rate on those with million dollar incomes raise? Or is that the purpose of this class warfare argument being made by Obama? I suggest it would be chump change, and many of those making over a million would increase their charitable contributions to avoid paying any extra tax.
