Several people here on the board describe themselves as Democratic Socialists. But there's a bit of a shell game going on with the definition. Some of them want to downplay the socialism, or the democracy, or both. They call it "compassionate capitalism" or otherwise try to spin it as not much different than what we have now. But the Democratic Socialists of America aren't so bashful. They lay out clearly the kinds of changes they want to make, and they're quite radical.

Here's their platform: DSA Political Platform - Democratic Socialists of America (DSA)

I'm just wondering that those of you who call yourselves Democratic Socialists think about that platform. Does it represent your overall political views and goals? Do you think the DSA is a legitimate standard bearer for democratic socialism? Or is it just a poorly named organization?

i am a fan of bernie sanders, and i find nothing particularly radical or un american. in the preamble. what is the problem? too "woke" for you?

First disclose what you call yourself and any party platform you're willing to fully endorse publicly.

The platform provides lots of juicy bits to chew on, but the most disturbing, in my view, is a general statement that might seem harmless enough:

The fight for socialism is the fight for true democracy — on the job and in all aspects of society.

They want "all aspects of society" subject to majority rule. I guess under socialism, it just sucks to be in the minority.

No, the woke part doesn't bother me. It's the unwavering dedication to majority rule in all things. Individual rights are clearly not part of the mix.
And, in general, it just doesn't line up with the soft-sell that most self-identified Democratic Socialists (at least here on the board) go with.

Shell games are a part of politics. The MAGA movement is constantly moving the goalposts regarding what it means to be a patriot. Apparently, it now means trashing the. Constitution and the Capitol.

Nope. True, it is poorly named. I am in no hurry to hasten the US even faster toward socialism or a socialistic economy. Too much is being done that way, now.

i am a progressive and the only platform i fully endorse was the 1912 bull moose progressive platform.

it is on line. teddy roosevelt would have been a great president!

Are you a Democratic Socialist?

Are you a Democratic Socialist? How do you define it? Are there organizations or parties that DO represent your values?

Having considerable difficulty naming any, I see. Not topical either?

The DSA is in line with Democratic Socialism that's been around since Marx. The only real difference is the incorporation of Critical Theory into it. Critical Theory is just the natural outgrowth of Marxism after the revolution of the proletariat fails to materialize.

1. What's the better alternative to majority rule? Minority rule?

2. This country wasn't interested in protecting minority rights, it was interested in protecting the political power of slave owning States who needed a handicap in the form of the electoral college because a decent portion of their populations were non voting slaves.

3. Slave States aren't really known for protections of individual rights, are they?
