He hosted UFC fights 20 years ago in AC when most promoters didn't want anything to do with it. It was while they were still codifying the rules, and trying to get it past the street brawl image it was getting.

I know for awhile there they weren't allowed to hold fights in NYC venues, which of course could hold up a lot of business opportunities. It may have been some of Trump's clout in NYC politics that had something to do with them finally making their break in the city.
No, it was the arrest of Sheldon Silver that finally got them in NY. He kept the UFC out of NY based on a contract dispute between the Culinary Union in Las Vegas and Station Casinos, which were owned by Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta, who also owned the UFC. Sheldon and the union were strong arming the Fertitta Brothers casinos in Vegas, by using Sheldons position in NY to prevent the UFC from holding MMA events in NY. It was super shady shit and the Fertittas refused to cave in to their strong arm tactics, so it took the arrest of Sheldon Silver to end the stand off. Once he was arrested, the guy that took over Sheldons position immediately cleared the way for the UFC (like literally that same week).Probably let them fight at a Trump hotel.
