Yes, another pox on both their houses post.
Core Beliefs are those things that you believe and can easily defend. An example may be in order. A Christian can easily explain and discuss their beliefs. They truly believe. They do not have to consult with someone else, they believe. And nothing will shake those beliefs. Examples of it in Politics would be Ronald Reagan.
Ronald Reagan believed in Conservative Values. He believed that tax cuts were good for the country. He believed a strong defense would good for the country, and the world. Reagan could sit down and explain those beliefs with ease, because he didn't need talking points. He knew what he believed. Take the tax cuts. Reagan had a Democratic Congress. Not a Democratic House and Republican Senate. They were both controlled by Democrats. Yet he was able to get his tax cuts through this Congress that declared it dead on arrival. If you think Nancy Pelosi is a powerhouse in the House, you have no idea what it was like when Tip O'Neil was in charge. Tip controlled the House with an iron fist. This was before the days of Rush Limbaugh, and long before Fox News. Yet Reagan went and addressed the people, and got so much support he got it through the Congress to the fury of the Democrats.
Star Wars, or the Strategic Defense Initiative. Another Dead on Arrival idea of Reagan's. He had opposition from the Democrats. Opposition from some of the biggest names in the news, and science. Everyone was talking day and night about how it could never work, it would be a huge boondoggle. Yet, Reagan again went out and using those Core Beliefs, talked to the people, and told them that it did not make sense to have a gun pointed at your head, while pointing a gun at someone else's head. Reagan was a staunch anti-Communist who actually liked the Russian People. His faith in God showed him to hate the people was idiotic.
Core Beliefs are easy to see when someone has them. The problem is that no political figure has anything we would recognize as a core belief these days. They are fully in on Winning. They are completely opposed to losing. Everything else is negotiable. And in the meantime we have become the political equivalent of a High School Homecoming Football game. One side shouts go Blue. The other side shouts Go Red. If they are winning, it is because their side is cheating. If you're winning, it's because your team is better.
Take the Riots. For decades Conservatives argued about States Rights, and unwarranted Government Intrusion. The Left always argued that the Federal Government should have a larger role in the nation. Chaffing about the States Rights nonsense. Conservatives still believe in States Rights, on Abortion, but not on Guns. They believe in States Rights on Death Penalty, but not on School Curriculum. And now, they are about two inches away from supporting the Federalizing of Police. A couple decades ago Conservatives would have rioted themselves to prevent that. So what changed?
There is a story, almost certainly untrue, that may actually reflect the attitudes of the people involved. Bill Clinton was elected and getting sworn in. During the parade and event, a flight of Military Fighters flew overhead. One of the new Administration glared upwards and said. "What are they doing here, we don't want them." A person next to him said. "Shush. Those are our planes now."
It is coming down to who supports and opposes what is essentially an oppressive Government depends on who is in power. When it is the Democrats in power, why we need to open fire on those damned Bundy loons who dare defy the Federal Government. When it is the Republicans holding the halls of power, why we need to open fire on those damned protestors and rioters. In other words, the only core belief either side truly has, is a desire to see the other side destroyed.
FDR called the Republicans the Loyal Opposition. He had Republicans in his administration. Frank Knox, the Secretary of the Navy as one example. FDR understood that the Republicans were just as clannish as the Democrats, but they were Americans too. Truman also had Republicans in his administration. Somewhere, somehow the attitudes changed. I don't know why I said somewhere, or somehow. It was the Impeachment of Bill Clinton. Ever since then the political parties have become more and more polarized. Each side wants to get revenge for the insults and slights that happened when they were not in power.
The only core belief evident is that each side wants to win, and destroy the other. That isn't America. That isn't the nation our grandparents and previous generations wanted us to have. It is the same conditions where we see violence breaking out among rival sects in second and third world nations. Think about that.
