Cohersion

Here we have it, proof of the claim by Ruby in previous threads that our military is FORCED into joining and forced to commit crimes against humanity.

I love the line about the staggering unemployment in South Carolina, what was it? 5.9 %.....

Currently we have a volunteer military but that dosent mean there arent aspects of coercion involved. Financial coercions, patriotic coercions (fall into the propaganda category which contain many numerous sub coercions within it), those who misplaced their trust and were already in the service when the orders to wage an illegal war were made etc.

That means their fault in serving Iraq is mitigated by those factors but of course it dosent mean they have NO responsibility for aiding an illegal cause.

I never used the word FORCED either. I dont suggest you try to characterize my views, you have proven to be quite bad at it. If we have a draft then we will have to use the word FORCED...until then we have elements of coercion.

I think this soldier highlighted some of the coercion pretty well.

We roll our eyes every time we hear the term ‘re-enlistment brief.’ Ugh. Since before we deployed, we’ve been collectively forced to attend a meeting every few months where some dude lays out the news: stay in the Army, and you’ll be handsomely rewarded. $15,000, college time, Airborne school, the works. Serve your country for a few more years, come on. They have a big sheet with everyone’s name, kind of like a grocery list. They check yes, no or maybe next to your name. When you tell them no, it was always the same chilly reply: you’ll fail on the outside. You’re just a vet with no skills, who would hire you? Before we left we must have had the lowest re-enlistment rate in the division. The only people convinced to re-enlist were those with families, who couldn’t risk getting out and suddenly not having a monthly check and health insurance. For the single guys, forget about it. Three or four years were enough for us. I knew the military life wasn’t for me.

and

Before we left Baghdad, the re-enlistment briefs got a little more disturbing. Instead of letting you know what a bum you’ll become if you leave the Army after your enlistment, they put it in simple terms: if you don’t re-enlist, you’ll be thrown in 5th Brigade, the Stryker unit on Ft. Lewis that was being stood up, and yes, they were deploying as soon as they could. So you might as well stay where your friends are and come back to Iraq with them. Otherwise, you’ll be taking your chances by getting your ass stop-lossed and sent to Iraq in as little as six months to a year after you returned. Better off with the sure thing. Here’s a pen, junior. If you got out after July 2008, you were screwed. I, on the other hand, was in the clear since I was getting out at the end of 2007. The options were re-enlist, extend to meet the unit’s needs, or take no action. I checked take no action, which meant my name would be added to the pool of possible candidates for 5th Brigade. No matter. It was of no consequence if I separated from the Army in 3rd or 5th Brigade. A lot of us were in that boat. Still, it spooked us that someone could come to us with a list and a smile and say in so many words that we were fucked into another deployment unless we added years to our contracts. In short, the thanks we got for serving our country was being forced into a game of Russian Roulette. Take the risk, pull the trigger. See what happens.

Month thirteen into our deployment and someone is getting desperate. They pick the best times to hold these briefs. We just spent a week straight in western Baqubah, where the explosions haven’t let up since Operation Arrowhead Ripper began weeks ago. Mercifully they brought us in for 48 hours to sleep in a bed in lieu of a muggy rooftop. The next morning a certain group was to meet for a re-enlistment brief. Those selected had the same thing in common: they all said no to re-enlistment at one time, and they all are set to get out of the Army from October 2008 to around October 2009. Privates to Specialists to Staff Sergeants, all in the same sinking boat of deceit. They were told that those not re-enlisting would receive orders to a new unit 24 hours after returning to Ft. Lewis. In a month they would be going to another post after fifteen months of time spent in Iraq, to a unit that could be deploying in the next sixty days! That meant either an Airborne unit or a regular light infantry outfit, meaning Bradleys or Humvees (which have a poor track record against wired propane tanks and landmines buried in the road). So here’s the deal, clear cut:

Re-Enlist
College Time
Bonus Money
We Love You

Don’t Re-Enlist
30 Out of The Next 32 Months Spent In Iraq
Humvee or Bradley Unit
You’re Going To Die

After all of this, I consider myself lucky. If I had joined the Army nine months later, I’d be at a crossroads. Those not so lucky are facing a fifteen month tour either way. Whether or not they stay with this unit, go to be a recruiter or drill sergeant, or just take their chances, is up to them. Shoot yourself in the foot or stab yourself in the hand. Oh, the possibilities.

Lets not bury our head and pretend not to see coercive elements here. Lets not pretend that the glamorization of war, the patriotic duty, the sign on bonuses, the college money etc are all not coercive enticements.

Well, maybe because of my experience in the Private Sector, I look at this a little differently.

In my early 30's I was a Buyer fo a major Department store that had it's pressense across the entire SunBelt, minus California....but pretty much most of the South, texas and a little farther west...

Anyway, I worked in their Florida Division, in the Corporate/Buyer's office in ST. pete....this was over 10 years ago....

We recruited college grads from the State Schools, promising them that we will eventually make them buyers, (if they succeed, which was not emphasized), I think we hired them right out of college at $28k, which was not bad at the time, especially for how low the cost of living was in Florida, (before this real estate boom.... that happened there).

Anyway, the deal was that we hired the college grads as the Buyer's "Trainees" so when they first were hired, they had a monday through friday schedule, 9 am - 6 pm, working by our sides in the Buyer's Office, which was exciting for them... vendors coming in all the time, presenting their merchandise for the buyers to choose, the wheeling and dealing over cost, and delivery, and exclusivity, and dating, and discounts etc.... fun. They were to do this for 3-6 months.

but then the next step was that they were to go in to the Stores, working as Managers of a department or asst. mgrs..... WHICH WE DID NOT EMPHASIZE....had hours of hell, included iron days of opening the store to closing the store, inventories that including working 3 24 hour days straight or you were ridiculed as a softy needing beauty sleep, weekend hours constantly, or night shift at Christmas where the Stopres did not close until midnight....

I can go on and on.....how horrible working in the Stores as a manger is....I did it myself in my youth and I always considered it paying my dues but things have gotten even worse at the Store level since then, with eliminating personel depts, and even credit depts now, and stock help, putting more and more on to the supposed sales manager and sales people....

Then, after paying your dues, IF AND ONLY IF ONE OF THE EXISTING BUYERS QUIT, these people would end up becoming buyers.... I would say maybe a 6-10 years wait, of busting their butts in the Stores, in hopes of making it in to the Buyer's Office.

So, the Company had a PLAN to hook these new graduates, that was very deceitful, when looking back on it and I believe it included coercion, only in a different manner.....promises that were unlikely to be met.

Included in pressures of keeping the Trainees at the store level, promising them that a buyer's position would open soon....

I have no idea what you are implying by the word in your thread title. I don't even think its a word in the english language.

Did you mean "coercion"?

So, you are saying that your military is not coerced, or forced to commit crimes against humanity, but do it of their own free will? Not very surprising considering how much propaganda the average US citizen seem to be fed, I guess. :eusa_think:

Damn or is that dam? My bad!

Yes yes, when one has no real input or has lost they always resort to spelling errors. Now of course if this board had a spell checker that actually helps you we might have less of them. But I am sure our liberal intelligensia , Maineman, Larkinn and all that bunch never misspell a word ever. Being our betters and all.

There are a host of words I do not know how to spell. And you all will just have to decipher my horrible english unless an online correction program is added to this board.

You could install a word processing program on your computer and run a local spellcheck first, then cut&paste it into the Message-box of the board, if you think its a big problem, the whole spelling thing. Maybe you wont lose as often in your debate-offs if you do?

Ohh I see, we lose because of spelling errors, not content. Damn I wasn't aware of that. I better get right on it.

I just read you saying:

Yes yes, when one has no real input or has lost they always resort to spelling errors.

So... I figured perhaps spelling errors wont be the reason for you losing, if you remove them from the equation.

I'm new on this board, but have seen all kinds of people on other msg boards. I will try not to be prejudiced, even though I get the feeling I have come across your kind before. :)eusa_wall:)

Talking about yourself in the singular instead of the plural might help you lose less as well.

I am not smarter than everyone here. I am, however, smarter than you. Get the distinction, dumbass? And I come here because I enjoy debates, and sometimes I get decent ones. With you its perpetually futile however.

Sure thing MISTER " I am so smart I go to classes you would never get in". And your not interested in Debates at all, your interested in telling everyone what to think and believe and showing us all how wrong we are for not just licking up your shit like candy.

I wasn't calling myself smart, I was calling you stupid. And really, please explain how you know what I am interested in? Ah yes...you don't and are making unfounded assertions...yet again.
