And maybe even a requirement that they also report drugs used to treat dementia and other mental disorders.

If welfare recipients can be asked to take drug tests, why not public officials?

Elected officials in Washington D.C. should be subject to the same kind of random drug screenings that blue-collar, working-class Americans have to endure. Congress shouldn’t get to live by a different set of rules. This effort is about maintaining accountability and ensuring sober service to We, the People.”

H.Con.Res. 135: Exposing Congressional Drug Abuse Act

Requiring Members of the House of Representatives and the Senate to participate in random drug testing.

We all know it will never go aywhere. But, it’s a nice political ploy by an aspiring candidate.

and some may wonder my general disdain for taxpayer paid government people or those in 'public serbice' . Mostly its due to them being immune from the rules as they are treated as SPECIAL in all regards . ----------------- just a comment that i think can fit in here .

Just as a candidate can apparently run for POTUS without even proving first he meets the basic requirement of being natural born of the required age, I wonder how Walmart can have stricter hiring standards for a cashier than for a member of Congress!

Isn't that the whole fundamental problem that is wrong with this country?!

Maybe we'd have better politicians running the nation if they were actually required to adhere to the same laws of paying taxes, staying crime and drug free, etc., as the lowest person working at the grocery!

This is where I disagree.

In our society, EVERYONE who meets the basic requirements outlined in the constitution should be able to run for any public office.

That is what makes our system unique and special.

Right. Exactly. And the basic requirement to run for the public office of POTUS is that you be natural born of US citizens AS a US citizen (preferably IN the USA IMO) and of a certain age. The thinking behind that is clear and certain that they wanted a person whom they could feel had his/her loyalties TO this country, as THEIR country. That condition was not met by Obama (otherwise there woiuldn't have been questions about his birth for years), nor do I suspect are Congress people, etc., screened for drugs and all the things ordinary people are, and other things. Moreover, much more is made of picking a SC justice than a president, though a president may serve 8 years, and has infinitely more power.

We all have a Constitutional right to elect an official that uses drugs. Requirements for holding office are in rhe Constitution. Passing a drug test is not one of them.
