About 100 years ago the legend of the loyal dog Hachiko came to be. Hachiko was the loyal pet of a professor who took the train from Shibuya station every morning. Hachiko would accompany his master every morning and wait all day until he came home off the train at the same station every evening. The professor passed away in 1925, but Hachiko sat and waited for him at Shibuya station every day for over a decade before passing away himself. At first chased away by local shop-keepers, eventually Hachiko's loyalty won the hearts of all those in the area, and eventually the country, and eventually the world. In 1934 a statue of Hachiko was erected just outside Shibuya station. It quickly became a well-known landmark and meeting place. To this day, if young folks are planning to get together and hit the town in Tokyo, they might all agree "let's meet up at Hackiko at 9 and go from there?"
