Chile

Someone called a moderate socialist, just goes to show how far left you truly are.

LOL You say left like it is an insult. It isn't. I would be insulted if someone called me conservative. Leftists are progressive. Progressives are forward thinking, open minded, innovative, promoting or favoring progress toward better conditions or new policies and ideas. There is nothing insulting or offensive about being labled a leftist. It is a compliment. :)

no their not.

taking from earners and giving it to others for votes and power isn't new.

and it always leads to ruin.

they're

I am an earner. Why are you so afraid? Difficulty adjusting to change?

Well, Chile has elected a new President, with the promise of a shift to the left, more education for all, and the very wealthy and corperations paying more taxes for that. Something that we should emulate here.

Great stuff, especially the word "promise". What a nice word.

I guess we'll see in a few years, huh?

Is anyone taking any bets?

.

Wonder how many in Chile would have voted for them if they ran on hope and change.

Coming from a far left Obama drone.

Maybe. Are you taking a position? That would be a breakthrough.

A 90% income tax on the rich? You've got to be kidding! They would cease being rich and be lower income like the rest of us and would have no incentive to lead corporations and deal with the stresses that go along with it.
I have no problem with some socialist programs like social security, a government run health program for all its citizens (not for illegal immigrants) and good schooling for its citizens. Other than that, you should be expected to make your own way in life. The government doesn't owe a living for being born. Your parents created you and are responsible for you up to adulthood, then it's out the door and best of luck.

Perhaps you need to learn the history of your nation. In the '50's, we built an Interstate System, the GI Bill was in effect, and we jumped way ahead of the rest of the world in percentage of the population that had higher education. Look at the top tax bracket at that time;

National Taxpayers Union - History of Federal Individual Income Bottom and Top Bracket Rates

With the present tax and economic structure, the wealth is being concentrated at the top in this nation, and we are falling behind because of that. Even little South Korea graduates more engineers than we do. And they have a far better Internet system, the 21st century equivelent of an Interstate Highway System, than we do. We either spend on infrastructure, education for all citizens that will work for the grades, and R and D, or we join the other has beens of history.

Mac, if the money does go into education for their citizens, that promise will be fullfilled. Look at what the GI Bill did for this nation.

We can't afford more. I know it's not fair, but it's the reality all the same. Our grandparents spend too much so that our parents could have more. Our parents spend too much because their parents taught them that deficits don't matter. Now, our parents are yelling at us to pay down the debt that has been accumulated for decades. Like it or not, we are going to have to make sacrifices so that our children do not suffer catastrophe.

What we do need is to be better at what we can do. Instead of more education, we need to transform our educational system to be more effective and relevant. Instead of more taxes, we need less spending with the ultimate goal being that one day our children just might be able to realize Coolidge's dream of lower taxes and fewer people paying them.

Lefties/Progressives are part of the 'Hope and Change' crowd.

Heavy on the socialist feel good platitudes.

And lite on the nuts and bolts of how to make their utopian dreams become a reality. .....

Well I can remove Chile from my list of nations to immigrate to when the USA craters...and it will crater thanks to out of control progressive big government policies.

Perhaps you need to learn some facts beyond the back of a cereal carton.
In the old tax structure there were so many deductions that very few people actually paid 90%. The effective tax rate was much lower.
The highway system is the last big government project that actually worked and did something. And that was over 50 years ago. Every pol seeking office promises some big program that will be the next highway system. Maybe synfuels under Carter. Maybe universal preschool. Maybe green energy. They are all gross wastes of taxpayer money riddled with fraud and crony capitalism.
Wealth is not concentrated. More successful people are being even more successful due to larger international markets. But less successful people are also being more successful, just not as much.
The ideal state of the left is equality: everyone poor and miserable.

Don't let the door hit you in the ass. In the meantime, we will be building a better US.

This woman is akin to the British or Swedish left. She made a speech a decade ago praising free trade and globalization.

So did Chavez.
Hugo Chávez Interview | The Progressive

She's not Chavez. Every Latin American leftist isn't.

She was President from 2006 through 2010 and she governed like Tony Blair. She is a moderate leftist.

But higher taxes on the wealthy is growing in popularity around the world because of rising income inequality. In many nations, the incremental gains from economic growth has disproportionally accrued to capital rather than to labour. So rhetoric and policies that swing to the left should come as no surprise.
