CHICAGO (CBS) – A South Side alderman is asking for City Council hearings on an unorthodox gun control measure that would allow for GPS tracking of firearms. WBBM Newsradio Political Editor Craig Dellimore reports Ald. Willie Cochran (20th), a former police officer, has suggested that global positioning system chips be embedded in new guns, and retrofitted on existing firearms, so they could be located if they go missing.

“Just like if your car gets stolen, OnStar can tell you where your car is. If your gun gets stolen, and you report it, we should be able to find that gun,” he said.

Cochran has introduced a resolution asking the Committee on Public Safety to hold hearings to receive testimony on the matter. A Massachusetts state senator from Boston has been pushing a similar measure in that state. Cochran acknowledged it might be expensive to install GPS chips on current and future firearms, but not as expensive as the cost of gun violence to society.

Just have system in place that anytime a gun is recovered at a crime scene, a serial number can be entered into a computer at any police station in the United States and immediately tell police the original dealer who sold the gun, and the original owner.

Serial numbers can be place on a gun in a manner that they can not be filed down without damaging the gun's firing mechanism.


The NRA has gone to great lengths to prevent trace forensic date from being shared, that is over. The NRA has caused more crime than any syndicate or mafia in history.

It doesn't sound too practical. You would have to have a battery in the device that would have to be kept charged. I doubt most gun owners would do this. If the gun was stolen, the first thing the thief would do is disable the device.

The only way to remove the GPS is to leave office.

When a gun fires, it leaves a unique "signature" on the bullet. When cops recover a weapon, they test fire that weapon and match the "signature" of the bullet they test-fired to the bullet they recover from the scene of a crime (or a body).
