Can Changing Diet and Lifestyle Reverse Type-II Diabetes?

Some interesting videos and brief article @ http://conservativehideout.com/2014/03/15/can-type-ii-diabetes-reversed/

I'm not a doctor but have heard more than a few claims similar to this that seems to make sense. I notice that when I follow some low-carb meals, my blood sugar level drops without having to increase my Novolog insulin. So, it was worth my time to view the videos. Judge for yourselves. :eusa_whistle:

No time to watch these now, but yes, type II Diabetes can be reversed in many people, but not in everyone. The key is eating properly, reducing sugar levels, and exercising. If you do all these things, not only will you possibly get rid of your diabetes, you will likely cut your cholesterol to acceptable levels, and you will reduce your blood pressure. Pretty much anyone can do this, but the question is to what level. A few years back, my cholesterol was almost 250. Today it is under 170. All it took was a change in diet and some exercise.

The biggest health problem Americans have is that most of us eat crap and are lazy and do not exercise. Those who eat decently and exercise tend to be in much better health than those who don't.

i get so sick of being told i can reverse this disease with losing weight....i did....i am at 130 to 132 at 5 ft 10 inches....my diet has radically changed....low carbs...i spend an hour shopping for fucking stuff...i simply look at the carbs and sugar...i have done everything they told me....i am on metformin 2x a day at 500 mg....and guess what ...i am still a diabetic...sure its controlled....but if you think its reverse...feed me a cookie or a piece of bread and watch the blood glucose soar...

first we are made to feel inferior for having type 2...then we are told we can reverse it? you can only control it...

and another thing....you can have 2 people doing the same things..eating the same things...one may control it...one may not....its a tricky disease to manage to begin with...

Ha exactly! Every time one of these clowns tout some cure I tell them about the Million Dollar Challenge that has been around for years. The only criteria is the 'cured' person has to be able to sit down and have some cake, a Coke and a smile. They always get real quiet after that,

Most people can reverse it. That you are one of the exceptions does not change reality. Ask any doctor, he/she will tell you it is reversible.

I don't have diabetes. It isn't about me. It is a simple fact. I had an acquaintance diagnosed with it and asked my doctor about what I had read, and was told it was reversible. This person doesn't seem to have the motivation or discipline to do what is necessary, however. I'm not saying every case can be reversed, but it is well known that it is reversible, if not for everyone. Do your research if you don't believe it. Heart disease is also reversible. These kinds of problems that are brought on by lifestyle choices are often reversible. If your diabetes is genetic, perhaps that is why you cannot reverse it. Don't assume that what is true for you is true for everyone.

most people can not reverse it....simple as that....i am hardly an exception and the fact that i use meds is not the end of the earth...i am still on the 500 mg of metformin twice a day which is the basic entry treatment for new diabetics....

i love these statements taht most people can reserve it....seem it would not be the health issue it is ...if that were true

there are a lot of scams out there that prey on sick people....diabetes can be reversed is one of them....funny none of the doctors i have seen have said this but again i am sure internet posters know more than doctors....

you are using the word reverse instead of control...simple as that....you may have remission for years with a gastro by pass....but even that only works for so long...i see several doctors and guess what...none of them say reserved or cured....they all use the word control

atients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes may discover that if they are overweight at diagnosis and then lose weight and begin regular physical activity, their blood glucose returns to normal. Does this mean diabetes has disappeared? No. The development of type 2 diabetes is a gradual process, too, in which the body becomes unable to produce enough insulin for its needs and/or the body's cells become resistant to insulin's effects. Gradually the patient goes from having "impaired glucose tolerance" — a decreased but still adequate ability to convert food into energy — to having "diabetes."

If the patient were to gain weight back or scale back on their physical activity program, high blood glucose would return. If they were to overeat at a meal, their blood glucose probably would continue to go higher than someone without diabetes. Also, the decreased insulin production and/or increased insulin resistance that led to the initial diabetes diagnosis will gradually intensify over the years and during periods of stress. In time, the patient who could maintain normal blood glucose with diet and exercise alone may discover that he or she needs to add oral diabetes medications — or perhaps even insulin injections — to keep blood glucose in a healthy range.

o 3 months ago...my a1c was 4.8...which is non diabetic.......after the procedure and the stress of recovery....my last a1c was 6.2.....i am not a happy camper but i realize the stress factor got me...

what always breaks my heart....you have 1's and 2's talking the 2's will always want the 1's to be cured...cure the babies and little ones...the older 1's are saying.....no cure the 2's first...they think its hard for us to do what we do...the 1's are use to what they do and as they say...they eat what they want then pump insulin....some day some one will unlock the key to this ....but so far they have not...

please remember that 1's have no control over this...they are simply the victims of cruel fates

as for 2's

genetics loads the gun, lifestyle pulls the trigger

the things i have noted so far that really fry my pie...my balance....i lean to the left now and have to be careful making certain moves.....diabetics have a horrible time with their feet....most of us spend a few minutes or more a day dealing with our feet....checking them and oiling them ...we wear socks or shoes...all the time...suppose to have shoes on all the time....80% or so of diabetics are in the hospital dues to dfu's...diabetic foot ulcers...podiatrists tell horror stories to make us listen....i check my feet daily and if there is the slightest doubt....hubby does it with a flashlight...

when one considers all the horror stories...remember this.....we have much better treatment today than we had even 10 years ago.....we have a slew of doctors and one specialist....pcp, pod, eye lady and the diabetic doctor...that is the least we see every year....or should see....

here is the problem...many diabetics just stop testing or caring....the more one tests the more likely they are in control but many just stop...its a hassle...you have dp and its hard to deal with....
you dont wanna test at work...or school or in the car etc and so forth.....there are 3 of us at work....
one considers anything under 180 good to go....that is not a good thing....it is a disease that tends to hit as you get older....and then you get the attitude....no one makes it out alive...i have seen 70 plus diabetics just tell health care givers ....to shove it....they will eat what they want etc...

and i refuse the advice of a personal trainer....i do not want to gain 10 lbs of muscle but i did listen to him on the sugar alcohols....i could not understand why my stomach would just roil after i ate something with them in it....they inflame the stomach lining....

it is hard to break a lifetime of bad habits...especially with the eating...i was always a foodie..food is an adventure to me and that had to stop...o i still enjoy dining out....but portion control is what its about...i still hate ordering a small filet and having to give half of it away....and i indulge in desserts...but one or two bites at the most...

if you are diabetic or have someone who is..and face it most of us do have a family member who is....
there are great message boards with veteran diabetics giving advice....

Okay, but they can go without medication, and their blood glucose numbers will say they are no longer diabetic. Based on the statistics, I should definitely have type 2 diabetes because I have hemochromatosis and my iron levels were so high at diagnosis that I was also found to have cirrhosis of the liver. Over 75% of people with hemochromatosis have type 2 diabetes. Those with untreated hemochromatosis have extremely high levels of iron in the body which are stored in the liver and pancreas as well as other organs including the heart. Too much iron and it causes problems. In the liver, it will lead to cirrhosis; in the heart, it will lead to heart failure; in the pancreas, it will lead to diabetes as the pancreas can no longer produce the proper amount of insulin.

I monitor my blood glucose regularly. Actually last month was the first time I had a higher than normal reading, so I'm a bit worried. It was just slightly elevated but in the past it's always been below 100. This time it was 104. I realize that is a long way off from being diabetic, but because of my health situation, I do not want to see those numbers all of a sudden begin to increase. I also eat an awful lot, but I have no choice. I run and work out a lot to stay in shape, and because of that I have a very high metabolism. I consume between 3000 and 4000 calories per day.
