On 6 April 1994, it is recalled that the plane carrying Burundian and Rwandan presidents Cyprien Ntaryamira and Juvenal Habyarimana was shot down by a missile over Kanombe airport in Rwanda, just when it was about to land.

‘No survivors from the plane crash’.

No survivors of the plane who were returning the two former heads of state and part of their delegations, a summit of heads of state of the sub-region that had just been held the same day in Dar-Es-Salaam in Tanzania.
The late Cyprien Ntaryamira had succeeded the first democratically elected president, Melchior Ndadaye, assassinated in Bujumbura, during a coup perpetrated on the night of October 21 to 22, 1993, three months after his inauguration on July 10 of the same year.

‘Assassination still shrouded in mystery’.

In addition to the Rwandan head of state and his Burundian counterpart, Cyprien Ntaryamira, five Rwandan dignitaries, two Burundian officials, and three French crew members were killed in the attack which is still shrouded in mystery.
