I still need to get x-rays. I fell outside down icy stairs (cement) last Tuesday. I know for a fact its very bruised, maybe fractured. How long if you had the same injury did it take to get better? I sit and drive a lot for work, so this sucks....

I had a friend who broke her tailbone.

Her Doctor said that
A broken or fractured tailbone will give you:
Pain that increases with sitting or getting up from a chair
Pain that increases during a bowel movement
Bruising or swelling
Tenderness over the tailbone
If it were broken it would hurt alot more and limit your movement more than a simple bruise

With a bruised tailbone:
You probably won't notice the pain from a bruised coccyx until the next day. A bruised bone is similar to bruised tissue. The initial shock is painful, but the area doesn't become tender until the bruise actually forms.
Sitting down with a bruised coccyx bone won't be as painful as you expect. Getting up, however, will be excruciating. Sharp pains will assault your tailbone and your lower spine. This is because your tailbone shifts when you stand up. A lot of pressure is exerted on your coccyx bone to support your weight while standing. This is the same as pressing a bruise on your skin.

You need x-rays to tell if it's fractured or broken though.
More than likely it would be a fracture rather than a break, if it was broke you would not be able to sit at all.

If it's fractured you can't sit, you have to stay on your side till it heals.

Bruised or fractured tail bones takes about 4 weeks to heal.
Sorry :smiliehug:

thanks Peach! I'm wondering too if anyone has fractured or bruised theirs before and how long till it got better and you could sit in a car without any pain? I drive for work...........

You might want to get yourself one of those blow up or foam donuts to sit on so that you can still work.
You can buy them at Walmart or Walgreens of maybe CVS.
Bruised or fractured it will take about four weeks for the pain to go away.

You can continue to have pain for the rest of your life.

Or not.

Get a radiograph.

If you go to the doctor, and /or get referred to a specialist,
if it is really bad, they should write you a recommendation
about your impaired ability to drive. Check on that, since it affects your work.

Some ppl I know took some disability leave because a car accident
required recovery time during which they could not work. So it counted as disability.

The last time I bruised my tailbone I had to sit the facing the other way leaning the passenger seat back.
I cannot imagine driving and this may not be good for you and the doctor may recommend refraining.

When I injured my hip joint, I could not sit in the car normally and had to sit sideways.
I am hoping your doctor will write you a recommendation not to drive where you could receive disability.

That sounds too painful and not a good idea to drive,
especially not for work where you can't sit all crazy lying sideways like I had to!
