The only thing that gives the story credence is that it came from a RU source. There have been sketchy reports of an intercept that caught a high level commander calling a lower level commander of a unit that had control of chem weapons. The story has been that the high level commander was demanding to know what happened and what was going on under his command. This has been thrown out as a suggestion that "if" Syrian gov't forces were responsible for an attack, it would have been a mistake and not the direct result of orders from the high command. These reports of an intercept have come from US and Israel sources with no connections being made to the source. The German's did in fact have an intel gathering vessel off the Syrian coast, so there is some plausibility to the story. Why would the German gov't leak this story? It would be SOP to leak to a paper of the sort that first published the story. A more reputable paper might demand more proof and data about the strory. A crappy little scandal sheet would publish it without much more than an anonymous phone call. Give the story time to simmer until the believable media demands real answers. The question is, why has the RU picked up on it ? Do they know the truth as to whether the report is true of false ? The world is demanding proof. Could this be the proof ? Is RU attempting to set the west up for failure and embarassment because they know the story is fasle, or are they back peddling and preparing to accept that the story is true, but that it actually clears Assad and the high command ? How and would this effect US response and support or non-support for the US response ?
