Did you even read the 2018 lawsuit? It had nothing to do with operational safety or "cleaning up." They were attempting to sue those energy companies for causing "climate change-related damages, including increased wildfires, extreme weather, and drought."

Dems and Repubs are in an odd predicament when it comes to oil production and the price of gas. Repubs who were erroneously blaming (lying) Biden for the post Ukraine invasion price spike in oil do not want to acknowledge how far the price of gas has come down. How could they do so without erroneously giving him credit for it when all thinking people know the price is set on a global market based on international supply/demand dynamics?
Dems don't want to acknowledge the US is producing a record amount of oil because it runs counter to the need for less carbon based fuel consumption to combat climate change.

It is a world wide commodity. If we produced less domestically we would be importing more while consuming the same amount of petroleum products.
