Bonds trial begins, putting steroid era back in spotlight - USATODAY.com
On April 8, the San Francisco Giants will unfurl the banner from their first World Series championship since moving to the West Coast in 1958, a title celebrated both for the long drought it ended and for the everyman quality of most of the players who delivered it.
Less than two miles away, the team's biggest star of the past 40 years — and baseball's all-time home run king — likely will be fighting for his freedom.
Barry Bonds' trial on four charges of perjury and one of obstruction of justice is scheduled to begin today (8:30 a.m. PT) in San Francisco with jury selection and could last three to four weeks, bumping into the March 31 start of the season.
Bonds' trial has the makings of a compelling affair, with testimony expected from current and former players such as Jason Giambi and Benito Santiago, his ex-girlfriend Kimberly Bell — who is expected to talk about his sexual dysfunction and fits of rage, both linked to steroid use — in addition to a secretly taped recording of his trainer, Greg Anderson, describing how he injected Bonds with steroids.
