While atheism has been a fad on the internet for some time, as far as history and historical cycles go, this doesn't seem to be anything completely novel, but something of a trend which cycles from time-to-time.
Back during Fredrich Nietzche's day and age, it seems that a similar popular trend of atheism and existentialism was the popular fad of the day; this is why he wrote "God is dead, and we've killed him"; from what I recall he wasn't actually entirely happy with it, since even though he was an atheist, he believed that religion or God at least provided some semblance of meaning to life, while popular atheism didn't.
