Even during the Cold War, when our main superpower rival was a Communist country so that the "menace of Communism" actually had SOME credibility, it was always true that ANTI-Communism was a bigger threat to American liberty than Communism.

We're choosing between one authoritarian form of government verus another just as bad, but bearing a different name.

It's not the system of government that is bad , it is the people who lead such a system. It almost feels like the US is facing a Democratic totalitarian government. Under this system we the people elect the dictators who lord over the rest of the population. These dictators start wars, use police to shut down dissent when they feel it necessary, they pack the government with their friends and family, and then they funnel as much government money as they can to those who paid to get them elected. Like communist Russia and China we are now down to one political party.

This is the type of reasoning that pervades politics and ruins this country: the idea that the other side sucks, regardless of the merit behind their ideas, and they should be stonewalled and restricted in every possible way. And if they share one-tenth of their characteristics in common but not the other 90%, they're not identical. And if that one-tenth that they share are the GOOD qualities of one of them, then for purposes of demonization they are NOTHING alike.
