The U.S. started supporting Israel in the mid 70’s, and that was after Israel had fought 3 of its major wars with groups of Arab countries and at overwhelming odds. And the support for Israel more because of national security, the U.S. realized that Arab countries were turning into satellite states of the Soviet Union.
Israel began buying arms from the United States in 1962 but did not receive any grant military assistance until after the 1973 Yom Kippur War. As a result, Israel had to go deeply into debt to finance its economic development and arms procurement. The decision to convert military aid to grants that year was based on the prevailing view in Congress that without a strong Israel, a war in the Middle East was more likely and that the U.S. would face higher direct expenditures in such an eventuality.
Don’t I have to constantly correct you Surada wherever you go..This is a misnomer about the aid Israel gets and it is not a one way street . Depends on what you call foreign aid… Israel is given an allowance by big daddy USA which is usually used by her to purchase US made weapons that Support US manufacturing jobs back home.. So it is a win win situation for both sides…Further it was not such a gift as Israel gave back the SInai peninsula to Egypt which had oil reserves which in today’s dollars far exceed what aid Israel receives from the US.But Israel did it anyway for a number of reasons… Itshould be pointed out that Egypt also receives a large amount of money from the United States as well so Israel is not alone in this matter… As a matter of fact if one was to look at the cost of keeping troops and feeding and housing them then US aid to such countries as Japan, South Korea and Germany far exceeds the aid going to Israel… It Is true that countries like Japan and South Korea pay some money back to the US for these stationed troops but there are other hidden costs such as deployment of battle groups and carriers and patrolling that is not calculated in the costs making South KoreaandJapan as well as Germany far bigger receipiants of US aid. Surada as usual only tells half truths..What would the cost be to US tax payers for example if the United States had to deploy troops in the area of Israel one only has to look at the cost of the war fighting in Afghanistan and the housing of troops to realize Israel has been a bargain and thankgd the Israelis usually fight their own battles…Israel has been getting US foreign aid since 1948. In fact they consistently get the biggest share of US foreign aid.
They are freeloaders and thieves.
