On the morning of April 15, 1865, at 7:22am, President Abraham Lincoln was declared dead, having suffered through the night comatose after being shot by John Wilkes Booth the evening before.

Here in town, there was no daily newspaper published in Oberlin at that time, so the awful tidings traveled by word of mouth the following morning. We encourage you to read this excellent blog entry over at the Oberlin Heritage Center’s website, about local reaction to the assassination.

One-hundred and fifty years later, we mark this solemn occasion by sharing from our collection this tintype of Mr. Lincoln, probably made as a copy after a photographic portrait of the president taken by Christopher S. German in Springfield, Illinois, on January 13, 1861. The mount of this tintype suggests that it had been placed in an album.

This was also a terrible day in 1912......The Titanic sunk...

This is old but you may find it interesting.

Taxes, assassinations, sinking ships. No wonder this is the favorite day of the left.
