Due April 13, 2029, the asteroid Apophis is expected to pass just 24577.516164 miles from the Earth.
PHA Close Approaches To The Earth

While not expected to hit, it wont be a non-event as,

"In fact, it will get beneath the geosynchronous satellites [which are 26,000 miles up], the same satellites that are probably used to beam your radio signals to your listeners. So that’s kind of exciting. But it won’t hit the Earth."

If you saw the movie "Gravity" you'll understand what happens when a satellite is destroyed. A chain reaction can occur where debris from the first radiates out destroying another whose debris radiates out and so on and so on.

And if it hit the planet, it'd be akin to a ~ 15 Mt nuclear explosion. The recent Cherabinsk airburster was about 500 kt.
