Chinese casualties were massive in WWII, much greater than those of Russia. Given the reduced bomb load in the Enola Gay it should have been possible to create space for a Chinese observer. as a gesture of suspect thus reducing post-war tensions it has always struck me as a stupid foreign policy error of omission. Any guesses as to why this seeming gimme was whiffed or why no apology to China for this error of omission?

Word on the street is that Truman considered that idea, but in the end decided against it.

.....Apparently he figured dropping Little Boy on Hiroshima would do more than enough damage, dropping the Chinese guy on the city would have just added insult to injury.
