Another good move by Obama

Obama announced $2.3 billion in tax credits Friday for 183 ventures to build advanced batteries, wind turbines and other "clean energy technology" nationwide, including projects in the Bay Area.

The tax credits, which are funded by the $787 billion economic stimulus package enacted in February, are designed to defray up to 30 percent of the cost of new investments in manufacturing facilities to produce clean energy products.

"Building a robust clean energy sector is how we will create the jobs of the future - jobs that pay well and can't be outsourced," Obama said. "This initiative will give a much-needed boost to our manufacturing sector by building new plants or upgrading old ones."

The tax credits announcement dovetails with attempts by congressional Democrats to shift attention to the economy and focus on a multibillion-dollar job-creation package.

Environmentalists joined Democrats on Capitol Hill in cheering the announcements as much-needed assistance for the struggling manufacturing sector.

"Millions of new, clean energy jobs will be created over the next decade," said Rep. Edward Markey, D-Mass. "The question is, will they be created in China or Germany, or will we create them here in America?"

Sen. Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., said the tax credits will help make the United States "a more attractive location for manufacturers of solar, wind and other green technologies."

U.S. to give $2.3 billion in clean-tech credits

Also from the quoted article:

But Rep. Doc Hastings, R-Wash., questioned whether too much emphasis was being given green jobs.

"Our nation should pursue green energy jobs, but we also need to be creating jobs in every energy sector," Hastings said.

Still present in Obama's budget is the retraction of over $30 billion in petroleum industry incentives, many of which have been part of the tax code for over 50 years. The expected fallout is the loss of tens of thousands of sector jobs, pronounced reductions in U.S. oil and natural gas production, and a considerable increase in imported crude and crude products.

Clean-tech credits are helpful and they have their place, but this is not the way to transition our country into an "economy of the future".

Why am I suspicious about the timing of such an announcement.

I wonder what other little 'gifts' will come our way in the run up to the elections? Cares about 'We, the People' or cares about keeping his assclowns in congress? Hmmmm.

I will say this....the money is needed for these projects. We need to have alternatives to our energy needs that are increasing exponentially. However the job market in America is such that any sort of employment arising out of this will be some sort of service type job. Manufacturing in this country is just too cost prohibitive.

Gotta agree. I have no problem with wind energy, good way to provide electricity and leave absolutely no carbon footprint. Didn't I read somewhere though that most of the componets for the Wind Turbines are produced overseas????

They will also have to present the elites in this country to allow these wind turbines in their areas. Ted Kennedy was all for it, just not in his back yard.

Will have to see how this progresses and how many jobs it actually creates.

I'll wait to see if this does anything to create jobs before I make an ultimate judgement. In theory it's a good idea. ANYTHING to spur ANY jobs would be appreciated in this economy.

tax credits? so he is lowering taxes to encourage growth in these areas. So you are conceding that conservatives are correct by suggesting that overtaxation stunts growth.

Sounds alright to me.

Yes it sounds great. Were our manufacturing jobs sent over seas intentionally to make room for or create a welcome for this? Are these plans truly more cost effective? Environmentalists are no longer the tree hugging protesters but have become corporate giants. Are these corporate giants American or foreign. Al Gore has not become worth $500,000,000 because tree hugging protesters have lobbied him to speak out on their behalf. I do not know enough about this to do anything but question. Until I know more I am going to be VERY leerie about all of this.

$2.3 billion for "green friendly" production while the EPA at the same time is initiating a $90 billion boondogle clean air mandate on American production???

For the love of God open your eyes people.

Obama is simply saying something that means nothing YET AGAIN.

Pay attention to what is really going on. The Obama speech meant NOTHING. He is giving special interest tax credits that will do next to nothing to spur economic growth. He is slush funding supporters with your tax dollars.

Chris - you are truly lacking in anything resembling understanding of what is coming from DC these past few years.

It is sickening...

Exactly.

Obama is ADMITTING tax credits/cuts spur economic growth - and yet, he is announces a super-narrow and limited tax credit for a group of special interest "green" corps and we are supposed to be excited over that?

Utter hypocrisy by both Obama and those chirping - "Oh tax credits - what a GREAT IDEA"

If you think its such a great idea, then why not across the board tax cuts - or economy wide tax credits to spur economic growth and real job creation????

Seems to be an attempt at changing the hands of corporate control is the objective here.
I could be wrong. I am not a smart man but this is what it looks like to me.

I am with you 100% so far. It seems really sickening

I bet you wont see any of the wind turbines in Mass. Esp near the Kennedy compound.

Funny that a family like the Kennedy's are real quick to tell you that you must have one in your backyard yet they cannot have their beautiful view of the bay blocked by some fan. But they are liberals and everyone knows what hypocrites liberals are.

It is the utter self-interest hyprocrisy that runs rampant through the environmental/socialist movement.

Gawd you guys are dumb.

Wind turbines can't be put just anywhere. When those things go, they are terribly destructive. Sometimes parts as big as a car can end up a half mile away. They are still being "developed". Besides deficits, deceit and war, what do Republicans develop?

You are showing just how dumb you are, moron. Mass. (You know the state) wanted and did put wind turbines in the bay area. Do you know what a bay is? Its a large body of salt water usually surrounded by two sides of land mass. The Kennedy family didn't want to look out into the bay and see the wind turbines that are 1/2 mile away and ruining their view. After claiming what a good environmentalist he was yet only when it doesn't affect his family.

But you can waller around in your ignorance.
