Anita Dunn...

btw - I think it would be useful for folks to look up the full context of what Dunn said - and to realize what Dunn did not say that is now being attributed to her.

Would be a good place for HONEST discussion to begin ....

Compare what she ACTUALLY said to previous quotes by Rove, Gingrich, Bush, etc .....

Dunn's words were clear - she admires Mao - the architect of communist China.

Her willingness to share such a thing at an American high school graduation ceremony is astounding - even in this current age of socialism-light...

Please give the quote where it says, she "admires Mao" or his policies or anything of that sort or even advocates Maoism. It's really not Obama or Dunns fault if you people are too stupid to see the ironic parallel she was using in her speech by quote both Mao and Mother Teresa. Let me just break it down:

Mao = Bad.
Mother Teresa = Good.
Thus this = A really dry play on Irony.

No- that is her attempt at reasoning the statement she made. Her problem is she went into a lengthy historical re-living of Mao's ascent to power, after she admitted that Mao was one of two political philosopher she turned to most. (The other being Mother Theresa - who was not a political philosopher...)

The history she reviews is Mao's ability to "basically take over China".

She either made a huge mistake in citing Mao as a figure of inspiration, or Dunn in fact, as she clearly stated, has great admiration for the political philosophy of the architect of Chinese totalitarian communism...

Here are the actual words of Obama White House Communications Director Anita Dunn regarding Mao...

A lot of you have great deal of ability. A lot of you work hard. Put them together and that answers the why not question. There is usually not a good reason. And then the 3rd lesson and tip actually come from two of my favorite political philosophers. Mao Tse-tung and Mother Teresa, not often couple with each other, but the two people that I turn to most to basically deliver a simple point which is you’re going to make choices, you’re going to challenge, you’re going to say why not. You’re going to figure out how to do things that have never been done before. But here’s the deal, these are your choices, they’re no one else’s.

In 1947, when Mao Tse-tung was being challenged within his own party, on his plan to basically take China over, Chiang Kai-shek and the nationalist Chinese held the cities, they had the army, they had the air force, they had everything on their side and people said how can you win, how can you do this, how can you do this against all odds against you, and Mao Tse-tung said “You fight your war and I’ll fight mine.” Think about that for a second, you don’t have to accept the definition of how to do things and you don’t have to follow other people’s choices in the past. Okay. It is about your choices in your path, you fight your own war. You lay out your own path. You figure out what is right for you. You don’t let external definition how good you are internally. You fight your own war. You let them fight their’s. Everybody has their own path.

We're all told to admire the astute political insights of Machiavelli, too.

He's another monster who worked for another murderous regime, isn't he?
Point of fact - Machiavelli was considered by his contemporaries to be a liberal republican wackjob. He wrote more than just the Prince, and if you go over his work you see what his detractors meant.

I don't care for Obama. Anyone who could be endorsed by the late unlamented Teddy Kennedy has a huge mark against them from the word go.

As for his PR adviser talking about Mao - Who cares?
Jennings and his whole case is more like "Guy makes a bad call 20 years ago in failing to report a kids alleged anonymous homosexual encounter to a potentially homophobic 'fag beating' father" and some want to crucify him (or anyone who thinks the case is pathetically lame) - no evidence that he ever engaged in illicit activity with a minor (to my knowledge). I think Jennings is a terrible choice for schools because his educational priorities seem skewed (I prefer emphasize basics and build from there to a complete education handled at the local level) but I wouldn't throw him out if he were competent in his field even if he was a a homosexual Fascist (hard as that ight be to envision) - I want him gone because he seems apt to muck education up more than it currently is.

I've seen a lot of "smear" tactics against Obama's appointments and that is inexcusable; they generally are objectionable on professional terms, so why make up some idiotic issue to try and ruin their private lives? Just let Obama know he needs better choices and if he fails to change - Vote against him in 2012.

Think about that for a second, you don’t have to accept the definition of how to do things and you don’t have to follow other people’s choices in the past. Okay. You fight your own war. You let them fight their’s. Everybody has their own path.
Good GOD I cannot believe you are arguing over this statement. It is NOT about communism. It is about defining what you think is right and then persevering against any odds that come your way.
Which if you think about it for just one second is, in fact, a pretty fair definition of The American Way
What a bunch of retards.

"Two of my favorite political philosophers." "Two of the people who i turn to most." Why do some seem so confused about what she said? Just watch the video. She clearly states that she admired Mao Tse Tung and his tactics. Is this just more Liberal loon, what is your definition of the word "is" stuff? Just watch the video for God's sake. This really isn't all that complicated. Geez!

I saw the video and have posted the full transcript many times on these boards. She states as you should be able to see from your own quote "but the two people that I turn to most to basically deliver a simple point which is you’re going to make choices".

She sets up the rhetorical strategy of irony by saying:

"And then the 3rd lesson and tip actually come from two of my favorite political philosophers. Mao Tse-tung and Mother Teresa, not often couple with each other,"

Why if she thinks Mao is so great did she say that they aren't often coupled with each other? Could it be that Mao was a totalitarian genocidal maniac and Mother Teresa, was well a nun that helped people?

Again going back to the original breakdown here:
Mao = Bad.
Mother Teresa = Good.
Thus this = A really dry play on Irony.

I mean the High schoolers got it, because they laughed in the video. I don't find it funny, because political humor pisses me off but, I mean whatever.

The history she reviews is Mao's ability to "basically take over China".

She either made a huge mistake in citing Mao as a figure of inspiration, or Dunn in fact, as she clearly stated, has great admiration for the political philosophy of the architect of Chinese totalitarian communism...

I'll admit ONE thing I personally would not have thought to use Mao in this instance, but then again I'm not Anita Dunn, maybe she took a class on Mao and found him to be interesting so she uses him in some of her speeches. IDK? I never took a class on Mao... I skipped college and I'm running to the military now. I'm taking some side classes on Aviation with a focus on Air Traffic control at a community college... and went to public school so I don't run into Mao much.

I also don't think she was using him as a source of inspiration (or intended to). My understanding of it is that she was using him as an example. I'm not sure that she wants high school students to overthrow the government, especially since she's been a campaign advisor since the Carter Administration. If there's no democracy, she doesn't have a job.

Watch the video. She clearly states she admires Mao Tse Tung and his tactics. Pretty shocking and a bit frightening too.

She never said she admired him. Show me in the text transcript that your counterpart posted where it says the admires Mao. I've watched the video and read the full transcript from Glenn Beck on FOX. She never stated that she supported Maoism. Your going to have to do better then that to damn a person by branding them a Maoist. There's actually textual evidence of Jone's former extremism. Communists are not secretive people, they don't hide the fact that they're communists. Believe me.

"Two of my favorite political philosophers." "Two of the people i turn to most." What more do you need to see to conclude she does admire Mao Tse Tung and his tactics? Would you apply your same strict standard of interpretation if she were a White House Director of Communications with an (R) by her name? She was very clear in how she felt about Mao Tse Tung. In fact she couldn't have been much more clear.

Why are you so confused?
She wanted to get the attention of a group of students.
She made a seemingly preposterous statement linking Mao and Mother Theresa.
She thus got her point across to a bunch of high school kids who were probably ready to ignore her.
Her point was a good one. Did you miss it?
It was; define your right and wrong, then work as hard as it takes to get to the right path for you, don't let someone else define right and wrong for you.

Damn but if that doesn't sound like something Ben Franklin or Tom Jefferson might have said.

Guess they must have been closet Communists, right?

Nice spin but not reality. Her admiration for Mao Tse Tung and his tactics were very clear. I'm sure if this woman were a White House Director of Communications with an (R) by her name, the Hopey Changey response to this would be much different.

Nice spin but not reality.

You talk about reality and yet are so out of ouch with it. The woman admires the human spirit which perseveres against the odds and you cannot see past your conservative blinkers that shut down all thought at the mention of one of the 666 names of the infernal.

Have any of you caught this?

But there's another reason she was picked for the Fox News fight — she's only an interim communications director, filling in until the end of the year. If this whole skirmish backfires on Obama, she'll be gone in two months and the administration will have time to distance itself. In other words, the communication team's toughest member is also their sacrificial lamb.

Another one under the bus.

Again I don't see anything that suggests that she IS a Maoist.

If I would say my favorite pholosopher is Hitler, would you call me a nazi?

She didn't come out of the closet, she just opened a door. ;)

Let's assume that she would. One she's in no position to do that. Two, we have a system of checks and balances in this nation that will put up with alot of shit but Maoism, not so much. It's just not theoretically possible atleast not within ONE administration or even five. Hell the Democrats (assuming that they are some totalitarian puppet wing of the communist party... which there is not a shred of evidence for) can't even get a health care bill passed... wth do you think they look like leading a mass genocide?

She's not in position to "exacute". She is in the position to talk and call for it, and she already done that. Here I am not talking about any killing, but about calling out Fox for being extended hand of Reps. She's calling for boycott now, soon it will be call to shut them down, who knows what's next... a lynch?

This should answer the rest of your post too.

This administration is becoming alarmingly arrogant. This really is an issue that should be alarming to all Americans. I do think more & more people are waking up.

Communism is an economic construct, just a capitalism is. Neither one, taken to their logical extremes, is good for the populace. Did you know that the scientist that gave us E = mc^2 and urged Roosevelt to build the Atomic Bomb (because Germany was going in that direction and which he later regretted) was a socialist? This Nobel prize winner and the Times man of the 20th century had his own FBI file, started on the charges of one Harriet Frothingham, that he should not be granted citizenship because of his political beliefs. How fucked up is that? The greatest and most peaceable mind of the 20th century almost couldn't live in or contribute to the US because of anticommunist hysteria. And you want to bring all that back?

Please explain why is that? What is so good in communism that we should adopt and accept in the US?

Twenty years ago, Berlin Wall came down after the Reagan called for it few years ahead. The fall of Berlin Wall and Warsaw Pact was by far, the biggest liberation of the people in the history of mankind. If communism was so good, why every singe European country that used to belong to Warsaw pact rejected it?

Every year since, World is celebrating fall of Berlin Wall and victory over communism regime. Last year Obama delivered speech at the same place where Reagan stood twenty years earlier and that speech was aired widely all over the World. This year was twentieth anniversary of the fall of Berlin Wall, and I haven't seen anyone on the left even mentioned it. I wonder why?

Maybe because communism is getting widely accepted in America? New breed of socialists are not even hiding anymore, they adopted the name of "liberals" and "progressives" and openly promoting communists ideas. Do you think something like this is normal in America?

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1gH8aUhcTA]YouTube - Bill Maher China is so efficient[/ame]

Maher is not even hiding his support of Maoism, and some "Americans" are applauding him for that. Anita Dunn found her favorite philosopher in Mao, and for this White House that is entirely normal. Do you see direction we're heading?

You're proving my point sir. Beck and people like you do not and do not intend to stop at Anita Dunn or at the government. You want an ideological purge of America, and if you expect me a tax paying citizen to support fascism I WILL NOT. What does Bill Maher have to do with Obama? What does Bill Maher have to do with government. WHY should I car eif Bill Maher is a communist? Which coincidently he's not, I mean that was clearly SARCASM... and I can gaurantee that he's not the only one to say it and there's a few on right that have said it to "I wish we had a dictatorship".

Fact is we have something called the 1st Amendment in this country. We respect people's freedom of speech. That means if I want to be sarcastic or even TRUTHFUL and go on nation TV and say I envy China for it's totalitarianism, that's my free right to do so. THAT'S what makes this nation what it is. That's the founding principle of this nation FREEDOM... even if you just want to be FREE to be DUMB. You have that right. Glenn Beck is the sorriest excuse of a libertarian I've seen in my life... he's a neo-con... he supported BUSH... and the BAILOUT... he continuously attacks people for their ideology and NOT their actions. He is a fascist... who wants division. Why can't you people see that?

This is reply to bold text above.

Her words indicate a clear affection/admiration for Mao. This is quite common in the more extreme left of academia.

And she was not attempting to "shock" the students into paying attention - most likely have little idea who Mao was, so in effect, what little they now know of him sounds a-ok according to Dunn's version.

I have given three commencement speeches and sat in on countless others - I have never seen such a blatant support of a communist totalitarian as the Dunn example.

That will likely change now, as she and others are becoming increasingly more open in their admiration of figures such as Mao and Castro, while the truths of such examples are not being taught to students...

Depends on if he's your favorite philosopher to study or because you want to implement facism and exterminate the "undesirables" of society. I like studying Ghaddafi and Kim Jong Il. I find dictators that run their nations via personality cults interesting. Don't want to live under one though.

Her job is to discuss media relations. I can see this as an attack on free speech, but Dunn has her right to speak freely about FOX and so does Obama. I feel that the strategy of attacking news organizations isn't a good one. They will LOOSE. It's better to ignore the media as a whole.

As for the boycott, she's late. The left has been boycotting FOX for years. Nothing new.

People whine about everything. It's not fair, their not news, well that's clear. Dunn is taking her job too far here, and they're stretching their limits getting into a mudslinging battle with FOX, but I mean Hell whatever. FOX is the one making money off it... so. To each his own.

Nobody asked you to. But as Americans everyone of us is entitled to our opinion and have a RIGHT to hold on to our own ideological views. That goes for Maoists, Salinists, Neo-Nazis, and EVERYONE else. The principles of liberty do not just apply to people who believe in it.

Obama and his Obama-Run Mainstream Media hate Fox News and that only makes me like Fox News more. So keep up the good work Hopey Changey! :)

Beck is goint to lose his mind after last weekend. Now there are a lot of people in the white house who are saying the same thing...will he try to smear all of them as well?
