Most of the advances in medical technology come from the United States?

If you look at the list of the Nobel Prize winners for medicine, a lot of them come from universities overseas.

Right.

But the majority of commercialized products are developed in America.

Compare the biotechnology industry in America to the rest of the world, for example. It is not even close.

And the rest of us benefit from that commercialisation in the US. In Australia because of our PBS - pharmaceutical benefits system - we get those important drugs cheaper than Americans can get them. I find that sadly ironic.

You're representing parts of the popular culture - parts, not all - as being totally representative and that's just not accurate. I could just as easily use ice hockey and curling, Celine Dion and poutine to traduce Canada. I won't though because I know the average Canadian is actually pretty smart. I don't think the average American is any sort of stupid. I just think that on the issue of health care they've been continually lied to by vested interests who use very effective techniques of persuasion.

OH and in portugal I had a routine mamo done...after 4 months I was notified to see another doctor asap because that machine (mamomatic) was defective...my xrays were all black...I was told I got a heavy dose of radiation...5 years later thyroid problems, surgical removal of 1/2 of it.

That didn't sound very routine. I'm sorry you weren't properly treated. I guess you couldn't avoid it in your case, but any treatments/procedures would be best done in the U.S.

That's not stupidity, that's ideology over common sense reinforced by a totally biased (to the right) media. And Bush only sneaked across the line and the second time was against John Kerry who wasn't a really good candidate, besides Bush had incumbency and was still the war president. There's a natural tendency to leave the incumbent in when there's a war (or what's perceived as a war) on.

Race is a huge issue in the States, yes. It's pretty bloody big elsewhere (but not everywhere) too.
