Many reverse engineering attempts were made on captured alien space craft. These reverse engineering attempts fail usually, because they don't consider imaging.
The propulsion system that we think is a propulsion system is not a propulsion system, but an image receiving platform. A partial image of A propulsion is received on it, and that together with the remotely located competing part of the system forms the actual propulsion.
Better success would be if we were to try to recover a received image history from these captured space crafts.
Although I don't recommend any of this work, because we are already too far into the devil's technology anyways.
