Washington (AFP) - US Vice President Joe Biden will travel to Ukraine later this month, officials said, as Washington warned Moscow of "additional consequences" if it fails to reduce tensions with Ukraine.

The announcement came just a day after Washington unveiled sanctions against six of Crimea's breakaway leaders, including the official who signed the deal with Moscow to split the peninsula from Ukraine.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A U.S. military official says a Russian fighter jet made multiple, close-range passes near an American warship in the Black Sea for more than 90 minutes Saturday amid escalating tensions in the region.

The official says the fighter flew within 1,000 yards of the USS Donald Cook, a Navy destroyer, at about 500 feet above sea level, saying this prompted ship commanders to issue several radio warnings. The fighter appeared to be unarmed and the passes ended without incident.

The USS Donald Cook was operating in international waters east of Romania. It was deployed to the Black Sea April 10th, in the wake of the Russian military takeover of Ukraine’s Crimea region and ongoing unrest there. The official was not authorized to talk publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

White House press secretary Jay Carney called a Russian fighter jet’s buzzing of a U.S. Navy destroyer in the Black Sea one of a series of Russian “provocations” and threatened that there would be costs for Moscow’s aggressive actions in Ukraine.

“I can assure you that Russia’s provocations and further transgressions will come with a cost,” he said. “Certainly if they go further down the road in attempting to destabilize Ukraine … the costs will continue to grow.”

U.S. officials are actively evaluating the escalating situation in eastern Ukraine, where pro-Russian forces have seized buildings in several cities and are not responding to Kiev’s demands for them to leave.

Carney said the U.S. will consider next steps including a new round of sanctions against Russia in concert with European partners.

Seems like zero force would be required. Just a simple request though I think Putin would overdo it and require America's Apologist-in-Chief make nice over having overstayed the lease.

Should it happen there is an improved chance that at least some of Alaska's locked-up natural resources would be open to development. That likely will really offend the greenie element as they would, at a single stroke, be denied their exclusive playground and lower prices for metals and fuels.
