Someone threw red paint on a statue of Christopher Columbus in Boston on Wednesday and spray-painted it with the phrase “Black Lives Matter" -- the latest in a recent backlash against monuments that memorialize racist white men.

Memorials of the Confederate variety have been branded with the slogan in Baltimore; St. Louis; Durham, North Carolina; Charleston, South Carolina; Austin, Texas; Asheville, North Carolina; and Richmond, Virginia.

It’s quite obvious why Confederate monuments are being targeted. Just two weeks ago, a white man executed nine black churchgoers in Charleston in arguably the most vicious anti-black terrorist attack after the civil rights movement. Since then, the removal of Confederate remembrances has been at the center of a national debate.

But defacing a monument honoring Columbus hits a deeper nerve. He was long dead when the Confederacy fought against the North in an attempt to preserve slavery. But while the connection may not be as direct, it’s clear why someone threw blood (back) in his face.

Columbus represents a longer, deeper legacy of racism in the Western Hemisphere. He and his cohorts were genocidal racists preoccupied with acquiring gold and raping Native women. Columbus' "discovery" of the “New" World -- which, for the record, was already inhabited -- linked Europe to the Americas and ushered in the transatlantic slave trade.

Columbus was an evil butcher and rapist. I applaud the activists who threw the red paint.

Laugh all you want, Shitting Bull, once again your ignorance of history makes you look like a tool

Yep, lets remove all our history and explorers because they weren't perfect. You native Americans weren't perfect either as you'd kill other tribes without thinking twice. The Aztecs loved to enslave other tribes under their control.

You don't like it that the rest of the world discovered your world. lol

Catch the defacers of the statue and fine them max or give their children tooth brushes and tell them clean it off.

As one historian put it, "Columbus was a agent of the inevitable".

European ship technology and navigation had reached the point where it was possible to cross the oceans and return. If it hadn't been Columbus, it would have been another adventurer.

People look back and compare the morals and values of European society 500 years ago with todays standards and are aghast. And want to erase history to sooth their personal conscience and make the world some sort of sterile liberal fantasy land devoid of facts or truth.

As a historical footnote: the Native Indians who inhabited this land were far from being the "nobel" savages that Hollywood and the PC crowd tries to portray them. .......

Yeah, those dirty Injuns, how dare they act like white man....

The Native Americans today were not the First Peoples, who arrive some 30 thousand years before them and then died out.

Yes, the destruction of Native America was a crime against humanity. Yes, the Native Americans were certainly no pacifists.

Yes, the current anthropologists who wear long hair and Indian amulets and arm rings think they could go to the movies with a Seneca warrior, who would instead carve out their hearts and eat them.

Lot of misunderstandings all around, folks.

They may not have been noble savages, but they did discover the land many years before Christopher came looking for a quick but at humanities expense..So the natives should have had Columbus Day named after them..derps...

Red is a primary color

lol, i bet if you ask your typical brain dead obama supporter what two colors mixed make red, they will attempt to answer...Uhm, ahhh, purple and blue?

Both of the large empires were destroyed by the "slaves" they were holding down. Sure, the disease was a huge cause of it but even the Chinese would of done it if they had landed in North America.

Sooner or later someone had to land in the new world.

Even Wiki proves you're an idiot.

Voyages of Christopher Columbus - Wikipedia the free encyclopedia

Columbus never stepped foot on what is now the USA. Never happened. :)

Central and South America were full of Native Americans.

All this hate towards Columbus and he never stepped foot on this continent. The Vikings were here 500 years before him and there is strong evidence the Celts predate the Vikings.
