A Question regarding Economic Classes

Citizens in 90% of the countries on Earth would love to be dirt poor in America.

Is that part of the reason conservatives want to make America's poor poorer? Because that is the conservative economic plan.

THE POOR HAD IT BETTER WHEN REPUBS RAN THINGS

true story

the very richest are getting richer FASTER under Progressive rule

ok continue making a fool of yourself pretending you arent in charge

How can the Democrats be in charge when the House is Republican and the Republicans in the Senate can block all legislation with the filibuster?

A gap between the rich and the poor is continuing to widen.

The poor get poorer while the rich get richer, it seems.

Why is this, guys?

I don't know for sure but it could be the war on unions. Too much immigration isn't helping. Too much exporting of jobs. The rich no longer need US workers to get rich. Where they do at places like walmart they still pay so little because the government covers the rest of the bill.

First, the poor aren't getting poorer. That's a myth. However, they aren't improving much either.

The reasons are because of the application of technology and the opening of China. Those who are able to manipulate technology in the knowledge-based economy have done well. Those who can't, haven't. This trend isn't changing. China lowered the global labor cost curve. Capital followed, and have been generating outsized returns relative to history. This trend probably is changing as labor in China is getting more expensive.

Wage inequality has been growing since the late 1960s. It's not a new phenomenon.

beg to differ....the poor and the middle class are both getting relatively poorer because the dollar is buying less and less....prices for food, gas, clothing, etc. keep rising....meanwhile thanks to Obamacare earned incomes are becoming stagnant, cut, or nonexistent...

if Dems arent in charge now then Republicans werent for 6 bush years; no make that all 8 years; since they NEVER had a filibuster-proof majority; not for one day

you're a clown

funny leftard; were Republicans able to block obamacare?

Obama's Stimulus?

obama's fin-reg?

Lilly Ledbetter?

i guess you're claiming Republicans agreed with all these things?

"The rich get richer and the poor get poorer" is a (mis)quote of a SONG LYRIC, for Christ's sake! It is not a cogent economic analysis.

The Poor are not, by any measure, getting poorer. In fact, when all public benefits are added into their cash incomes, they are doing relatively OK, compared to previous generations of people at the bottom. Furthermore, most of the people at the VERY bottom are there due to disastrous life choices (having babies they can't afford to support), and not some sort oppression from "The Rich."

The sad fact that all of the "Progressive" rhetoric about "income inequality" is trying to hide is that there are indeed more people who are struggling to get by than there have been in a long time, due largely to having an incompetent fool in the White House and a cadre of self-serving jackasses running the Senate. No "recovery" in the past 50 years has been this lame, if in fact there is any recovery going on at all, which is very debatable.

So now you're saying that the Republicans never ran things, while you're also saying that the poor were better off when Republicans ran things.

You are one confused corky.

In simple terms, the widening range of income levels comes from an economy which out of adjustment. Specifically, the mechanisms of wealth distribution don't balance the mechanisms of wealth creation.

Our market capitalism is a high powered wealth creating system -- albeit one with a hgh level of risk and instability as well. For the past 25 years or so the most powerful wealth creating sectors have been financial services and technology, particularly the technology of automation, robotics and data management. These sectors have produced fabulous wealth but are characterized by relatively low labor input. There are a number of mechanisms (compound interest, economy of scale, natural monopoly) in our system which produce capital concentration.

Our mechanisms of wealth distribution include, of course, wages. But since the labor input of the most productve sectors of the economy is low, relatively little of the wealth produced goes to workers.

This imbalance between wealth creation and wealth distribution was recognized a century ago and additional mechanism were created: graduated income tax and inheritance taxes, compensatory government programs in health, education and welfare etc. These government programs designed to balance the inherent tendency toward capital concentration have been under attack since 1980 and are no longer adequate to keep the wealth generated in our economy distributed adequately for the needs of our society.

In simple terms, you can't run a 21st century production system with a 19th century distribution system.

you idiot; i'm saying things were better when republicans ran things.

i said ACCORDING TO YOUR SH*THOUSE LOGIC dems never ran things.
AND if your logic says they never ran things then by YOUR LOGIC Repubs didnt either; since you're crying like a baby that your majority of both chambers of Congress wasnt BIG ENOUGH to affect "change"

well from Day One of obama for all of the first two years obama's Dem-majority of both chambers of Congress was BIGGER than Bush's Republican majority was AT ANY POINT in his whole time in ofice

gosh ur stupid

in fact it was so large that at one point Dems DID have that FILIBUSTER-PROOF MAJORITY; for something like 13 weeks.

not long but 13 WEEKS LONGER THAN REPUBS HAD ONE

That's actually not true. The studies on the poor getting poorer tend to overlook government aid like Section 8 and other programs. Factor those in and even the poor are considerably better off.

this is what deregulation for deregulation gets you folks.

In North Korea and Cuba, they don't have that problem, do they? They have an elite 1% and then everyone else is "equal", "distributed" , "shared" "collective". Numbers show people would rather be poor with opportunity in the US vs. equal in some Leftist state.

The income inequality attack is a play by Leftists that want US to go down the failed path of Collectivist economies where there is truly a 1% and no middle class, no opportunity. Further, there is still income inequality......1 percent vs. everyone else.

Actually, the avg. wage from Walmart is just 29 cents below the avg. of the retailers.
