Hey, glad to see 'ya.

I understand how nations
like Russia, China, and India,
benefit from their poolicy
of permitting us
to destroy ourself

and why the European Union
encourages us
to seek oil for the West
with but little cost or harm to it

But I can't understand how we expect to benefit
from our failed war in Iraq
and our bootless war in Afghanistan,
or, for that matter, from our seven to eight hundred
world wide network of military and naval bases
that alone, used or unused,
are sufficient to bleed us to death.

Nor can I understand how Israel expects to benefit
from our joint ventures
that exacerbate
anti-Israeli and anti-semitic feeling
throughout the entire world.

And I wonder,
if you were an Arab would you be a Nasser-Saddamist Arab?
If you were a Muslim would you support a jihad?

Are there any idealistic Israeli leaders?

If the American President
has handed control of the American military
and the wealth of the American treasury
to a small foreign power,
and if the congress is drunk on power,
is there a "Supreme" Court
that would come to our aid?

Parade rest!

You're off target!

For all you know
I may have stood more times
in the overseas pay line
than you have stood
in your
home front chow line.

And if I intend to write poetry
I'll do it in iambic pentameter
and I'll double it in spades
(after conferring with Milton
in Hades)
and I will tell you I did so,
so that you may know
I did so.

So at ease and
eyes up and off the ground
and that goes for both you
and 3 up and 2 down,
and if you really don't care
I'll write
as I damn well please!

glad to meet you, Burp,
your name reminds me of Germany
and of WW II
and its beer
and its burp gun
so why don't we two
just drop our fists
and go have a beer

Will the time come when our eyesight will be restored,

and we will pick up our bed and walk,

and if we have two coats will give one t
o someone who has no coat,

and will forgive and treat others,

whether brothers or strangers,

as we would hope they would us,

and will beat our swords into plough shares
and into pruning hooks,

or will we
just go on being
the Americans we are today?
