9.8 ...Unemployment

Warped Democrat philosophy in a nutshell...4% Unemployment with a Republican in there = "Depression." 10% Unemployment with a Democrat in there = "Everything is just fine."

I don't trust Democrats on Economic issues. They're just not honest. They screeched that 'Sky is Falling' B.S. when Bush had great economic numbers. So their spinning of their own horrifying economic numbers really is pretty comical. Don't trust em.

Not only that my friend, they are now telling us this is the new standard.

I find it highly unacceptable.

Well, nobody ever accused Marxists of raising the bar. They're all about dumbing down.

Lowest Common Denominator.

That comment proves you don't understand what capitalism is.
Marx understood that capitalism became a revolutionary force after emasculating government.

Do you see any evidence he was right?

Reality proves Marx wrong. The the collapse of the Soviet Union, the starving hordes in North Korea, the Mao Body Count, and the failure of every attempt at a workers' paradise demonstrate the defects of his ideology.

I suggest you read something:

DEATH BY GOVERNMENT: GENOCIDE AND MASS MURDER

You forget the killing fields of Pol Pot...

We're in agreement that the economy has not recovered; however, I'm not sure if your reason about the size of the Federal Government as a % of GDP makes as much sense as Dean Baker's autopsy of the President's Fiscal Commission:

"The country has a large deficit today because the collapse of the housing bubble wrecked the economy.

"This is simple and obvious to everyone familiar with the dynamics of the budget and the economy.

"If the unemployment rate were at its pre-recession level of 4.5 percent, we would have, at most, a modest deficit.

"Furthermore, the story of out of control government spending is entirely an invention of people with an agenda to pursue. In 1980, non-interest spending (?) was 19.8 percent of GDP.

"The Congressional Budget Office projects that it will rise to 21.1 percent of GDP in 2020 under President Obama's budget.

"An increase in spending of 1.3 percentage points of GDP over 40 years hardly qualifies as out of control.

"Much of any additional revenue needed can be obtained by a tax on Wall Street financial speculation.

"Remarkably, the commission's co-director's apparently never considered this obvious source of revenue."

You're overooking the fact that the Housing Bubble and Collapse are due to Big Government mangling of the economy in the first place.

No. The housing bubble was caused by a combination of seller's greed and buyer's ignorance.

can you please define 'sellers in this context'?

can you please define 'ignorance' in this context?

what % of those buyers ( who are having issues related to purchasing in the last say 10 years , refing etc.) do you think were ' ignorant'? 5, 15.....25....50%?

The Boston Fed wrote a paper that said banks should disregard standard credit worthiness criteria for low income minorities. The regulatory bodies then used that as a hammer to deny charters for banks that did not comply.

And so credit standards for everyone ended up being eliminated.

Low income minorities did not cause the mortgage crisis.

I didn't say they did. Try reading for comprehension.

Big Government meddling is at the root of the crisis. Buyers and sellers are always going to engage in transactions in which greed and information are in contention.

When the Government pumps up the volume of transactions by DERISKING the principals with taxpayer money, it distorts the market with drastic, and inevitable consequences.

The Fed, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and Congress enabled this crisis. Banks took advantage of the free money (always a moral hazard), and ignorant borrowers joined the con game by lying on their loan docs and/or borrowing far more than they could reasonably believe they could pay back.
What role do you assign to Wall Street in this crisis?

Countrywide or Ameriquest?

Big Government and Big Business (Money) worked together to create a housing bubble designed to blow up, and when it did "government" socialized the cost and privatized the profit primarily for the benefit of those who created the bubble in the first place.

I already mentioned that in my comment.

Try reading for comprehension.

And why the Founders didn't want a Central banking authority run by the Federal Government.

In a book released earlier this year, Scott Rasmussen observed that, "The gap between Americans who want to govern themselves and politicians who want to rule over them may be as big today as the gap between the colonies and England during the 18th century." is it any wonder that so many have commented that we are at the same crossroads as we were in the 1700's that decided the fate of those people in their time?

Trick here is? WE have a Republican form of Government our forefathers didn't have that allows us to boot our leaders right in thier proverbial asses.

The Founders were very brilliant men. Visionaries.

Its obvious that employers are reacting to the concept of a Republican House and are shedding jobs. The uncertainty and fear, plus the realization that Congress will be unable to do anything to help employment is driving up the unemployment numbers

uh huh....lets see if that has any sanity built into it ; what was 2009 q4 gdp RW?

Oh and you have confused a conjugated verb with a helping verb ...its not-

the realization that Congress will be unable to do anything

its-

the realization that Congress WAS unable to do anything

you see, things will get done now ( correct form ) and not on a partisn basis because they simply have the numbers .

Amazing that unemployment shoots up as soon as the Republicans win the House

Coincidence? I think not

in fact its amazing that unemployment has not gone down after 3 trillion dollars and many many months of the complete majority, since you know, all the hope and change was scheduled and enacted.

It's on the list of things to do folks......But first we have to look into Don't ask don't tell. Then we need to make sure all the illegals who crossed over with the kiddies in tow or had them later on are granted amnesty then are given a fully paid college education thanks to Uncle Sam or the taxpayers take your pick. Then we need to make sure Americans are eating correctly. Then at some point this administration will get around to looking into letting companies know what there energy costs and health care costs and taxes will be for the next year so these companies can plan.

This administration could do what's needed to get people working but they would rather just dick around and do other things instead.

Any specifics on what this admin could do to get people working?
Aside from the mythological tax cuts and deregulation.

I do agree that this admin AND the congress (both sides) have sat on their butts about the jobs issue though.

Well, clearly engaging in class warfare, increasing taxes and regulations and demonizing anyone who disagrees with them isn't working too well.

Marx got the solution wrong.
An all powerful state is not an improvement over the corporate/state rule favored by capitalists and other assorted fascists.

Marx saw capitalism's end game as clearly as anyone who ever lived, i.e. a period of enhanced financialization as a result of the Paradox of Accumulation. The rich run out of widget makers to invest in so they turn to stock market roulette with any losses socialized by the state.

I'm taking your advice and reading the link you provided, but I can't help noticing it's light on US/Capitalist inspired murders. Is that because UH is confused about the number of Indians slaughtered in North, South and Central America during the 18th and 19th centuries?

The millions of Koreans, Laotians, Cambodians and Vietnamese exterminated by the US military since 1945?

The amount of war profits that genocide has produced?

Sheez ... that's what 4 years of Democrats controlling the purse strings gets you...

Well that and over 14 trillion in national debt..

---------------------------:hellno:

In a potentially serious setback for the U.S. economy, hiring unexpectedly stalled in November while the nation's unemployment rate jumped to 9.8%, reversing a pattern of slow but steady improvement in the prospects for American workers.

The grim report released Friday by the Labor Department flew in the face of strong job growth in October and a slew of largely positive economic indicators in recent days. And it called into question the belief of most economists that the recovery from the worst recession in a generation was gaining momentum.

Unemployment, jobs: U.S. unemployment jumps to 9.8% as hiring stalls - latimes.com

Actually we are over $15 trillion

U.S. National Debt Clock : Real Time

Add the debt and def together and it's $15.1 + Trillion

Check that link and then try to wonder why more people don't want to shrink government.

Shrinking government would mean less tax collections, would mean more National debt. We can either hire more government workers, or give everybody a massive tax cut.

The basis for reducing the size of government is so government has to spend LESS money.
The way to go is smaller more efficient government.
Question....Do you think it is necessary for the taxpayers to fund the wages, benefits and pensions of people who cut the grass on US properties in DC and other places?
Or would it be more efficient to sub out that work at a much lower cost?

Yeah. Government needs to get out of the way and allow the marketplace to function.
Please do not start that "no regulations" bullshit. That is not a valid response.

It's all they've got. If you're not in favor of Euro-socialism then you must be for abolishing the fire dept in your town. You're either a flaming socialist like they are or want the U.S to become Somalia. They cannot think any deeper than this.
