Some Americans like when their leaders are called "stupid" and "incompetent" because they aren't particularly wrong. His attacks on Washington as an outsider resonate with many people. So many career politicians run as "outsiders" when they totally aren't. Trump certainly is an outsider.

Also, he's speaking to the blue collar, uneducated workers who've struggled over the past few decades when he talks about China "beating" us in trade negotiations.
