The Itamar Massacre left Israel's heart bleeding: On the night of March 11, 2011, 6th day of Adar, two Palestinians attackers from the village of Awarta, Anjad and Hakam Awad- entered Itamar, in intention to 'become martyrs'. They borrowed weaponry from a relative (including long knives), skipped Itamar's fence, tricked security and roams the place undisturbed,
They looked for potential destination for about an hour, entered one of the houses, and when finding it empty took a short M16, bullets and vests.
Finding a crowded house minutes later, they waited, and when assuming all family members were sleeping, they attacked. The house belonged to the Fogel Family, where the husband, wife, and five of their children were sleeping.
First, Amjad murdered the 11 year old, Yo'av, repeatedly stabbing the child in his chest and stomach. Together, he and Hakam turned to kill 4 year old El'ad, first stabbing him repeatedly, before strangling him. Turning to the master bedroom, they were surprised by the father Ehud, who woke up, and assumed the element of surprise will allow him advantage. However, they overpowered him, stabbing hin multiple times until he collapsed. When entering the room, the mother, Ruth, also tried to hold them back, but they overpowered and killed her as well.
The two assailants searched the house in attempt to find rifles and keep terrorizing Itamar, when they realized why Ruth tried desperately to hold them back. The baby girl, only 3 months old, was in the master bedroom. They returned and murdered her with one deep stab to her head.
Under the impression that there was nothing left to find in the house, they left, miraculously not noticing the two remaining children in the house- Ro'i, who was 8, and Yishai, who was two years old.
Hours later, the older daughter, 12 year old Tamar, returned, to only find her family slaughtered.
Days following the event, the killers were captured and now serve life imprisonment.
