I'll disagree mildly about retail. At every McDonalds there are 3 or 4 people making decent money. It might take a couple years to get there and some transferring but it is there.

I also have a buddy working at a big box hardware store. He is not the store manager but has done well for himself the last couple years. Has a house in the white burbs, cars for him and his working wife, couple kids with phones. The rough period for him seemed shorter than the McDonalds guys.
