Much of the deaths by handguns is as a result of suicide. If someone is absolutely determined to commit suicide and you take away his/her/its gun(s), they'll still commit suicide. Nut job people that decided to kill themselves, also take others with them and crimes in the past, have shown that they don't need a firearm to kill many people, then themselves (either by their own hand or by the "suicide-by-cop" scenario).
