a once in history, only in one country benefit from having built up our productive plant so much in Ww2, plus we were the only industrialized country that remained un-ravaged by that war. Then we threw it all away buy building up Japan and Germany, by not nuking 3 major Russian cities (before 1948 when they got the bomb, and before 1958, when Russia had no plane that could fly a nuke to the US). We could have imposed the Pax Americana. No Russia-commies, no China, No Korea, NO nam, no Nigaraugua, no Cuba, no problems in the Middle East, either. The latter could have been prevented with ONE "clean" air-burst neutron bomb, over teheran, in 1979, too. Nobody would have blamed us even a little bit, Russia said they'd stay out of it, China was still nothing at that point, most Americans would have cheered their heads off and the punks in the Middle East would never have dared do another danged thing. But Carter didn't have the cojones for it and thousands of Americans have died because of it.

this was the only time in history whe one parent's income, working no overtime, provided adequate income for a family. Previously, it was both of you working like dogs, 80 hours a week unendingly, on the farm and you STILL couldn't by your farm or send one kid to college, much less all the kids.

yet this ideal has become so embedded in our collective consciousness that we just can't face the reality of the fact that the 50's and 60's good times are not coming back, ever.
