19th anniversary of Aum sarin attack on subway observed ? Japan Today: Japan News and Discussion

"Tokyo Metro officials on Thursday observed the 19th anniversary of the deadly 1995 nerve gas attack on the Tokyo subway.

Twenty employees observed a moment of silence at 8 a.m.—the time the attack took place—at Kasumigaseki. Flowers were also placed at the station.

“The memory of that day is still vivid,” said Shizue Takahashi, whose husband was a subway official assigned to the Kasumigaseki station, located in the administrative district of Tokyo. He was one of two victims at the station.

Earlier this week, Takahashi said that many young people are not aware of the attack and she hoped that it will never be forgotten.

The attack on March 20, 1995, by the religious cult Aum Shinrikyo left 13 people dead and about 6,300 injured. The coordinated attacks at stations near the center of Japan’s seat of government sowed panic throughout Tokyo’s heaving metro system.

Among the thousands of injuries, some were injured permanently by inhaling or coming into contact with the gas, which cripples the nervous system."

It's important that people never forget.
