Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, has claimed the 10th victim in California, in what health officials are calling the worst outbreak in 60 years.

Since the beginning of the year, 5,978 confirmed, probable and suspected cases of the disease have been reported in California.

All of the deaths occurred in infants under the age of 3 months, says Michael Sicilia, a spokesman for the California Department of Public Health. Nine were younger than 8 weeks old, which means they were too young to have been vaccinated against this highly contagious bacterial disease.

"This is a preventable disease," says Sicilia, because there is a vaccine for whooping cough to protect those coming in contact with infants, and thereby protect the infants.
However, some parents are choosing to not vaccinate their children. In other cases, previously vaccinated children and adults may have lost their immunity because the vaccine has worn off.

Seems the most likely scenario is well-to-do, 'concerned parents' that chose not to immunize their children with DPT. Now those children are exposing infants too young to be immunized. This is one outbreak that cannot be laid at the illegals doorstep:

When those data are combined with data from the Census Bureau on the Latino population of California counties and the Department of Agriculture on median county income, a picture begins to emerge about the real demographics of this illness outbreak.

Twenty California counties have reported 100 or more cases of pertussis in 2010. Those counties contain 85 percent of the state's population, and 88 percent of the state's Latino population. They have reported, in total, 5,900 cases of whooping cough out of the state total of 6,631 cases.

Latinos have been the subject of intense speculation because the California Department of Public Health is reporting that the epidemic appears to be affecting Hispanic infants more than other races. CDPH only has hospitalization information on 40 percent of the cases and draws their conclusions on the epidemic's effects from those limited data...

It's also rare enough that if only that tiny portion of children who could not receive the vaccinations went without them it would make outbreaks like this one far less likely. It's the much larger group of parents who voluntarily choose not to vaccinate that create the much larger portion of the risk.

1- Parents are not getting their children vaciniated.
2- Whole populations of immigrants who do not have their shots come into this country and are bringing in things we more or less had taken out of the system.


And a word of WARNING all of you adults. Those shots we all had when we were kids is worn off and you are all just as susceptible to pertussis as the children are. Get your boosters!

and that indeed is why parents are warned to watch for certain symptoms after the initial dose. As you found, they drop that portion then of the 3, but I'm assuming you took care to protect him and others regarding the other two.

That's what 'caring and responsible' people do. Especially 'intelligent' people that understand statistics and how diseases spread. Other than infants, the elderly, and those with serious health issues, whooping cough is rarely fatal but still is awful from what I've heard. I've never known anyone that had it and I'm over 1/2 century old.

The quacks with their crap studies and the fools that buy into them should be held responsible.
